Pontiac V8 Fuel Pumps- Mechanical
Off the Cam — Fuel Pumps- Mechanical for Pontiac V8s
A mechanical fuel pump bolts to the timing cover and runs off an eccentric on the cam, which is how every carbureted Pontiac V8 left the factory. There is nothing to wire, no relay, no tank work, and no noise. For a stock rebuild it is the correct part, and for a lot of street performance builds it is still the simplest answer.
Butler stocks Pontiac-specific mechanical pumps from Holley, Mr. Gasket and Edelbrock in the 110 GPH range, plus the Rob Mc Performance Six Valve high volume pumps for builds that have outgrown a stock-style pump but are staying mechanical.

More About Fuel Pumps- Mechanical
1. The stock rebuild path
If the engine is going back together carbureted and close to stock, a conventional mechanical pump is what belongs on it. Butler's 110 GPH options are direct replacements.
| Holley 110 GPH | Listed as fitting all Pontiac V8s, flowing 110 GPH free flow with shutoff preset from 6.5 to 8 psi, so no regulator is required. Inlet and outlet are tapped 1/4" NPT and the fuel body casting rotates to suit your plumbing. |
| Mr. Gasket 110 GPH | A Pontiac V8 pump at 110 GPH free flow with the same 6.5 to 8 psi preset shutoff, 1/4" NPT ports, and a lower body that clocks to different positions. |
| Edelbrock Performer RPM | Rated 110 gph / 416 lph with 6 psi maximum pressure and a 3/8" NPT inlet. No regulator or sending unit included. |
2. When a stock-style pump runs out
Past a certain power level a 110 GPH pump becomes the restriction, and Rob Mc builds a Pontiac six valve pump for that point.
| Six Valve, 130 GPH | Listed as supporting engines of 550 horsepower and up, with 1/2" NPT side inlet and bottom outlet and maximum output pressure of 7 psi plus or minus 1, about 1 psi less with a vapor return. The valve body turns to any angle with no disassembly. |
| Feed line size | Rob Mc's minimum is 3/8" or -6AN up to 450 hp and 1/2" or -8AN up to 550 hp. Feeding a big pump through a small line defeats the pump. |
| Aftermarket blocks | The housing must be clearanced to clear aftermarket blocks. Plan for it rather than discovering it on assembly. |
| The 1100 hp version | Butler also lists a Six Valve pump rated up to 1100 hp. Rob Mc specifies their dead head regulator as required with that pump. |
3. What goes with it
A mechanical pump is simple, not immune. The supporting parts still decide whether it lives.
| Pre-filter | Rob Mc calls for the factory in-tank filter or their own inline prefilter ahead of the pump. |
| Pump to carb | Butler builds inlet kits with the hose and fittings matched for Rob Mc, Carter, Holley and Edelbrock pumps feeding a Holley or a Pontiac Quadrajet, under Hose Kits & Accessories. |
| Fuel and hardware | The Six Valve pumps are listed for gasoline or gasoline and ethanol blends, and come with holes for 5/16 mounting bolts. |
If the car is carbureted and the power is where a mechanical pump can feed it, stay mechanical. Quieter, nothing electrical to fail, and one less thing to explain to the next person under the hood.
