Pontiac V8 Crank, Piston, and Rod Tools
Measured, Not Guessed — Crank, Piston, and Rod Tools for Pontiac V8s
Crank, piston and rod tools are the ones that turn a box of parts into a rotating assembly you can trust. Ring gap, bearing clearance and rod bolt stretch are all measured jobs, and every one of them is easier to get right than to fix after the engine is together.
Butler stocks Total Seal adjustable tapered ring compressors across the whole Pontiac bore range, ring squaring tools and a manual ring filer, the Pontiac-specific crank socket and turning nut, piston stops, a rod bolt stretch gauge, a dial bore gauge and rod and piston storage.

More About Crank, Piston, and Rod Tools
1. Ring Gap: The Number Most Builds Get Wrong
Rings arrive with more gap than you need or none at all, depending on the set, and the gap has to be cut to the bore you actually have. Butler recommends .016-.018" ring gap for street engines. Check that against the ring manufacturer's instructions for your specific set and application before you start filing.
| Butler manual ring filer | Steel construction with a coated grinding stone, mounting bracket and handle. The method is the same every time: put the ring in the bore, square it with a squaring tool, read the gap with a feeler gauge, then grind and recheck often so you do not take off too much material. |
| Ring squaring tools by bore | ProForm dual sided billet squaring tools in 4.000-4.230" and 4.240-4.380" ranges, plus the black anodized Butler tool covering 4.230-4.380". The tool pushes the ring in square so the gap you measure is the gap you have. |
| Why it matters | Filing rings properly is what keeps pistons and cylinders from being damaged. A gap that closes up under heat has nowhere to go but into the bore. |
2. Ring Compressors Sized to the Bore
Total Seal adjustable tapered compressors are billet, black anodized and reusable. The tapered bore squeezes the rings down gradually as the piston is tapped in, which is what prevents a ring or a ring land from being damaged on the way down the cylinder. Pick the one that brackets your finished bore.
| 3.890"-3.995" | The small bore end of the range. |
| 4.000"-4.120" | Covers standard and common overbore territory for a 350 or 400. |
| 4.125"-4.225" | The middle of the Pontiac range. |
| 4.225"-4.345" | Big bore 455 and stroker territory. |
| 4.345"-4.455" | The largest range stocked, for aftermarket block work. |
Measure the bore after the final hone, not off the machine work order. A compressor one size off will not close down far enough or will not open up over the piston.
3. Turning and Indexing the Crank
| COMP crank socket, Pontiac V8 | 1.385" ID with 3/16" and 1/4" keyways on a 1/2" drive, with a knurled retaining nut that holds a degree wheel in place. The nut can be loosened on the crank snout so the wheel turns independently of the engine while you find true TDC. It fits Ford, Buick and Pontiac V8s but will not fit a Buick 455. |
| Pontiac crank turning nut, 1/2" drive | Same 1.385" ID with 3/16" and 1/4" keyways, for simply rotating the assembly on the stand. |
| Piston stop, 14mm spark plug style | A top dead center stop with adjustable depth that threads into the plug hole with the heads on. This is how you find TDC without pulling anything apart. |
4. Rod Bolts and Bearing Clearance
| Rod bolt stretch gauge | Adjustable length, billet aluminum body, dial indicator reading in .001" increments. Stretch is the honest measure of clamp load on a performance rod bolt, where a torque wrench only reads the friction you happened to get that pull. |
| COMP dial bore gauge kit, 2-6 in. | Dial indicator, bore gauge, adapters and anvil/shim kit in a wooden case. Zero it against a master or micrometer and you can read rod bores, main bearings and cylinder bores directly. |
5. Handling Parts Without Hurting Them
| Piston installation tool | Steel shot filled plastic, for tapping a piston through the compressor without marking the crown. |
| Rod and piston holder | Black powder coated steel, 24 x 12 x 9.5 in. tall, built to support piston and rod assemblies in order during teardown or assembly. |
If you are buying one tool off this page, make it the squaring tool and a feeler gauge. Everything else on a short block can be checked by the machine shop, but ring gap gets set at your bench, on your bore.
