Pontiac V8 Fuel Pumps- In-line
On the Frame Rail — Fuel Pumps- In-line for Pontiac V8s
An in-line electric fuel pump mounts on the frame rail near the tank and pushes fuel forward. It is the quickest way to get more fuel to a Pontiac V8 without opening the tank, and it lets you put a pump on an engine that has no mechanical pump drive left or a timing cover that has been blocked off.
Butler stocks the Holley Red, Blue and Black carbureted pumps, plus Street/Strip EFI inline pumps for throttle body and multipoint systems, and the 30 amp relay and wiring kits from Holley and MSD that those pumps need to see full voltage.

More About Fuel Pumps- In-line
1. The carbureted pumps
Holley's Red, Blue and Black pumps have been the default on carbureted cars for decades. They are not interchangeable.
| Red | 97 GPH free flow, 71 GPH at 4 psi, maximum 7 psi. No regulator required. Draws 2 amps. Not for alcohol or methanol. |
| Blue | 110 GPH free flow, 88 GPH at 9 psi, maximum 14 psi, and it includes a Holley fuel pressure regulator. Draws 3 amps. Not for alcohol or methanol. |
| Black | 140 GPH free flow, 120 GPH at 9 psi, maximum 14 psi, 3/8" NPT ports. Draws 4 amps. Compatible with alcohol or methanol, and a regulator is required. |
| Hard limit | Holley states all three are not designed or recommended for use with fuel injection systems. |
2. The EFI inline pumps
EFI needs a pump built for high pressure and continuous duty. Butler stocks two Holley Street/Strip options.
| Billet EFI inline | Rated to support up to 900 EFI or 1050 carbureted horsepower, with a -8 AN female ORB inlet and -6 AN female ORB outlet. Compatible with pump gas, race gas, diesel or E85, though Holley notes pump life is reduced on 100 percent ethanol. Ships with a -6 to -8 discharge fitting with an integral check valve. |
| Street/Strip EFI inline | For throttle body, multipoint and forced induction multipoint EFI, rated to feed up to 800 hp on throttle body, 700 hp multipoint and 600 hp forced induction multipoint. Draws 5 amps at 15 psi, rated continuous duty and tested to 2,500 hours, with 3/8" barbed fittings included. |
3. Wiring, filtration and safety
Almost every complaint about an inline electric pump comes back to this list rather than the pump.
| Relay it | Butler stocks a Holley 30 amp relay kit for any electric pump under 30 amps on 12, 16 and 24 volt systems, with 12 AWG wire to limit voltage loss. A pump seeing low voltage does not make its rated flow. The MSD kit adds an 8 foot harness and a 30 amp circuit breaker. |
| Fuse and shut-off | Holley recommends their relay kit with a 7-1/2 amp fuse, and strongly recommends a safety shut-off switch with the Red, Blue and Black pumps. |
| Filter both sides | Coarse ahead of the pump, fine after it. Butler stocks 100 micron pre-pump and 40 or 10 micron post-pump filters. |
An inline pump is the easiest electric pump to install and the noisiest to live with. If the tank is coming out anyway for a sender or an EFI conversion, look at the in-tank modules before committing to the frame rail.
