Lunati Hydraulic Roller Cams
Pontiac V8 Lunati Hydraulic Roller Cams
Matched Cam and Lifters — Lunati Hydraulic Roller Cams for Pontiac V8s
These are the Lunati Voodoo retro-fit hydraulic roller cams for the Pontiac V8, supplied as cam and lifter kits so the roller lifters come matched to the grind. Three profiles are stocked, stepping from a low-rpm torque cam through to a high performance street grind.
Each is published with advertised duration, duration at .050", gross valve lift at both 1.5 and 1.65 rocker ratios, lobe separation and an rpm range, so you can size one against the rest of your combination before you buy.
More About Lunati Hydraulic Roller Cams
1. The Three Kits
All three are retro-fit hydraulic rollers supplied with lifters. Lift is given at both rocker ratios because the difference is large enough to change your clearance checks.
| 262/270 advertised, 211/219 at .050" | .507"/.515" lift with 1.5 rockers or .557"/.566" with 1.65, 112 lobe separation with a 106 intake centerline, rpm range 1400 to 5400. Lunati describes it as a strong increase in low rpm torque and horsepower that works well with OEM-style injection, and it is a common marine and economy pick. |
| 270/278 advertised, 219/227 at .050" | .515"/.530" lift with 1.5 rockers or .566"/.582" with 1.65, rpm range 1800 to 5800. Lunati calls it great midrange torque and horsepower, notes it likes a 2000 rpm stall converter, and says it works well in towing applications with lower gearing. |
| 282/290 advertised, 231/239 at .050" | .535"/.550" lift with 1.5 rockers or .588"/.604" with 1.65, rpm range 2200 to 6200. This is the high performance street grind. Lunati says it likes an upgraded intake, carburetor and exhaust, needs a 2800 rpm stall converter in most cases, and requires 9.5:1 compression for maximum performance. |
Read those converter and compression notes as requirements, not suggestions. They are the difference between the cam doing what the chart says and the car feeling slower than it was.
2. Why a Cam and Lifter Kit
| Matched parts | the kit includes the camshaft and the correct Lunati hydraulic roller lifter set, so the lifter body, the wheel and the profile were designed to work together. |
| Retro-fit means retro-fit | Pontiac never built a factory hydraulic roller block. These are retro-fit lifters with a tie bar, and that tie bar is what drives the rest of the parts list. |
| Lift at 1.65 | if you are running higher-ratio rockers, check coil bind and retainer-to-seal clearance against the higher lift figure, not the 1.5 number. |
3. What Else the Job Needs
| An aftermarket valley pan | a stock valley pan will not clear the tie bar on hydraulic roller lifters. Budget for one. |
| A bronze or polymer distributor gear | all hydraulic and solid roller cams require one. |
| Springs for the profile | a roller lobe at .550" of lift is not a job for forty-year-old factory springs. Match the spring to the cam and the installed height of your cylinder heads. |
| Pushrod length | a retro-fit roller lifter sits at a different height than what came out. Check it rather than reusing the old pushrods on faith. |
