Pontiac V8 Lube/Chemicals
Right Grease, Right Place — Lube/Chemicals for Pontiac V8s
Lube/Chemicals is the shelf of small containers that decides whether a fresh Pontiac V8 survives its first revolution. Assembly lube carries bearings and lobes until oil pressure arrives, cam and lifter lube gets a flat tappet through break-in, and the correct threadlocker or anti-seize keeps a fastener exactly where you set it.
Butler stocks Driven assembly grease and HVL, Red Line assembly lube, COMP Cams cam and lifter lube, the Permatex threadlocker, thread sealant and anti-seize range, ARP Ultra-Torque fastener lubricant, plus gear and transmission fluids, block filler, cutting fluid and fogging oil for long storage.

More About Lube/Chemicals
1. Assembly Lube: What Goes Where
Assembly lube is not one product. A bearing wants a film that dissolves into the oil and never plugs a filter; a cam lobe wants something still there weeks later when the engine finally fires.
| Driven Synthetic Oil Assembly Lube, 16 oz | The one pound tub used by Joe Gibbs Racing, described as an extreme pressure lube that dissolves in oil without clogging passageways or plugging filters. For cams and lifters at break-in, and for rocker shafts, pushrod tips, wrist pins and distributor gears. |
| Driven HVL, 8 oz | Built on GP-1 Pennsylvania base oil for cling and tack and fortified with ZDDP, for bearings, piston skirts, bushings, timing chains and gears and oil pump gears. It mixes with the break-in oil and will not harden or leave parts sticky. |
| Red Line Assembly Lube, 4 oz and 16 oz | Three times the film strength of conventional black moly greases without clogging filters, and a rust inhibitor good enough to store parts for years. Use a small amount on bearings and piston skirts, and keep it off exhaust bolts, which want anti-seize. |
| COMP Cams Engine Assembly Lube, 8 oz | A white lithium base lube that clings until start-up, also called out for the ball-socket area of roller and stock rockers, and it washes off with soap and water. |
2. Cam and Lifter Lube for a Flat Tappet Break-In
Initial start-up is the most critical moment in the life of a camshaft, and on a flat tappet Pontiac you only get it once.
| COMP Pro Cam & Lifter Lube, 8 oz | COMP says to spread it generously on every lobe, on the bottom of every lifter and on the distributor gear. The bottle is sized for a full V8 cam and a set of lifters. |
| COMP Pro Cam Lube, .625 oz | The single-use packet that ships with many cams. Fine for topping off, thin for doing sixteen lobes on its own. |
| Pair it with the oil | Driven states that its assembly grease combined with BR break-in oil gives the highest protection for camshafts, lifters, wrist pins, distributor gears, pushrods and retainers. The break-in oils themselves live under Oils & Filters. |
3. Threadlocker, Thread Sealant and Anti-Seize Are Three Jobs
One stops a fastener backing out, one stops fluid tracking along the threads, and one keeps a fastener from welding itself into the hole.
| Permatex Threadlocker Blue | Rated for 1/4" to 3/4" nut and bolt work, locking against vibration while still coming apart with hand tools. |
| Permatex Threadlocker Red | For 3/8" to 1" heavy duty work, adding 3,000 PSI holding power on slip and press fits. Cured red must be heated to 500F to separate, so it is wrong anywhere you expect to go back in. |
| Permatex High Temperature Sleeve Retainer | Anaerobic and good to 400F, it secures slip and press fits and restores fit to worn or out of tolerance parts. |
| Permatex Thread Sealant with PTFE, 4 oz | Rated -65F to 300F, sealing and resisting pressure in air, oil, diesel fuel and hydraulic systems. This is what belongs on a pipe thread fitting, not silicone. |
| Anti-seize, aluminum and nickel | The aluminum, copper and graphite blend runs -60F to 1600F and suits spark plugs, head and exhaust bolts. The nickel version protects to 2400F and is recommended where copper contamination must be avoided and with stainless, titanium and nickel alloys. |
| ARP Ultra-Torque, .5 oz | A fastener lube under the head and on the threads, so the torque you read is the clamp load you get, pull after pull. |
4. Gear Oil and Transmission Fluid
| Driven GO 80W-90 conventional GL-4 | GL-4 protects yellow metals and gives proper synchronization, best suited to classic muscle car manual boxes such as the Muncie. Driven points you to a GL-5 80W-90 for rear ends instead. |
| Driven STF Synthetic Synchromesh | Used in the Tremec T56 and TKO, formulated for the yellow metals in manual transmissions. |
| Driven AT3 Synthetic Racing ATF | High temperature protection and shear stability, formulated for racing use only and not an API service oil. |
5. Shop Chemicals and Storage
| Moroso Block Filler, gallon | Mixes with water, helps keep thin cylinder walls from cracking, improves ring seal and dampens vibration. A race block treatment, not a street one. |
| Copper gasket coatings | Permatex Copper Spray-A-Gasket and VHT Hi-Temp Copper Gasket Cement dissipate heat and fill minor surface irregularities on head, carburetor and exhaust gaskets, with the Permatex rated -50F to 500F. |
| Foggit fogging oil | Formulated for high performance engines to cling to cylinder walls and displace moisture on a stored engine, where surface rust can start within days. |
Buy the lube before the parts. Nothing stalls a build like a clean set of bearings on the bench waiting on a tube of grease.
