Pontiac V8 Long Blocks (Assembled)
Assembled and On the Cradle — Long Blocks (Assembled) for Pontiac V8s
An assembled Long Block is a Short Block Kit with cylinder heads, put together by a Butler engine specialist rather than shipped as parts. That covers the whole bottom end plus the heads on top, leaving you the camshaft-driven top end hardware, induction and accessories to finish.
The assembled packages listed here are Butler's budget builds on the 389 casting and the 400 557 casting, in 3.750", 4.000" and 4.250" strokes. They are internally balanced, include a Viton rear main seal and ship on a reusable engine cradle.

More About Long Blocks (Assembled)
1. Long block, short block, full kit
Butler uses these terms precisely, and the difference is what is physically in the crate.
| Short block | prepped block and balanced rotating assembly. No cam, no heads. |
| Long block | the short block with cylinder heads fitted. |
| Full KIT | the long block plus camshaft, lifters, timing set, gaskets, oil system and intake. |
| Assembled | built and sealed in Butler's shop instead of boxed for your bench. |
2. What the budget packages here are built from
These assembled packages are aimed at the street car that wants a dependable rebuild rather than the biggest number on the dyno sheet.
| 389 casting | 3.750" stroke at 395-400 ci, 4.000" at 421-427 ci and 4.250" at 447-454 ci. |
| 400 557 casting | 3.750" stroke at 406-412 ci and 4.000" at 433-440 ci. The 557 block is the budget casting and is held to 4.000" stroke and under 500 horsepower — if the plan is bigger than that, start on a different block. |
| Rotating assembly | cast or forged crank, internally balanced, Total Seal file fit rings, performance rod and main bearings, with 6.625" I-beam rods on the short stroke and H-beam rods as stroke goes up. |
| Piston choice | flat top, dish or dome. Supply your head casting or chamber cc at checkout and Butler confirms the compression ratio before building. |
| Block prep | cleaned, magnafluxed, sonic tested, deburred, torque-plate honed, line honed with ARP main studs, square decked, then assembled by a Butler engine specialist. |
3. Finishing the engine
Budget on a camshaft and lifters, a timing set and cover, an intake, an oil pan and pump, a water pump, a damper, ignition and a gasket set. Because the assembly is internally balanced, the damper and the flywheel or flexplate have to be neutral balance parts — that is the single most common mistake on a first Pontiac build.
