One Valve at a Time — Ferrea Valve Singles (each) for Pontiac V8s
Ferrea valve singles are sold one at a time, which is what you want when a Pontiac head needs one valve replaced rather than a full set of eight. It is also how you mix intake and exhaust counts, or replace a single valve damaged during a teardown without buying a set you do not need.
Butler stocks Ferrea 5000 Performance Series stainless intake and exhaust valves and 6000 Ultimate Race Series valves as singles, in head diameters from 1.660" to 2.250" and overall lengths from 4.980" to 5.344", covering stock cast iron castings, Ram Air heads and 72cc Edelbrock heads.

1. Why Buy Singles
Sets are cheaper per valve, but they are not always what the job needs.
| One damaged valve | a dropped valve, a bent stem from a missed shift or a burnt exhaust valve is a single-part problem. Butler sells the matching Ferrea valve on its own. |
| Odd counts | building a set of heads with a different intake and exhaust size, or replacing only the exhaust side, is straightforward when the valves are priced each. |
| Matching what is in the head | if the heads already have Ferrea valves in them, buying the same part number as a single keeps the set consistent in weight and length. |
2. Overall Length Is the Spec That Matters
Head diameter is the number everyone looks at. Overall length is the number that decides whether the valve works in your head.
| 4.980" valves | the 1.770" exhaust and 2.110" intake at 4.980" are listed for 1971 castings numbered 96, 7K3, 197 and 7F6, along with 4X, 6X, 5C, 16 SD and 64 heads. A 1.92" x 4.980" intake covers 389 and 421 heads. |
| 5.110" valves | the 1.770" x 5.110" exhaust is listed for 670, 16, 62, 13, 12, 48 and 061 heads. A 1.66" x 5.110" exhaust is stocked alongside it. |

3. A Longer Valve Changes the Whole Column
Ferrea and Butler flag this directly on two of the part numbers, and it is the most useful tech note in this category.
| Deliberate length swap | the 1.770" x 5.230" exhaust may be used in 670, 62, 13, 12, 48 and 16 heads to gain taller spring height for higher lift cams. The 1.770" x 5.110" exhaust may be used the same way in 4X, 6X, 96, 7K3 and 5C heads. |
| The catch | both notes carry the same warning. You must use a longer pushrod. A taller valve raises the rocker tip and the stock rod no longer fits. |
| What else moves | a longer valve raises install height, which changes seat pressure. Plan the retainer and shim stack around the new measured height, not the old one. |
| Pre-1964 389 | Butler notes that pre-1964 389 heads should use the 1.60" valve rather than the 1.66" x 4.980" exhaust. |
4. 5000 Series or 6000 Series
Ferrea builds both from a one-piece forging, and the difference is what the valve is asked to live through.
| 5000 Performance Series | CNC machined to tight tolerances, one-piece stainless forging with a special heat treatment, hard chrome stems and a hard tip. Most applications are available in an undercut stem and dished head. Designed for street performance engines and mildly modified drag and oval track use. |
| Compression note | many 5000 series valves feature flat combustion chamber faces to help increase compression in naturally aspirated engines. |
| 6000 Ultimate Race Series | designed to provide reliability in an environment of high spring pressures and roller cams, with higher fatigue resistance and tensile strength, EV8 stainless, friction-welded hard tips and a swirl polished head. |
| How they are made | the head is forged in a slow two-step process to avoid damaging the material structure, then fully machined, triple heat treated, stress relieved, ground and coated, with ultrasonic and x-ray testing piece by piece. |
5. Order the Small Stuff With It
A single valve rarely goes in alone.
| Grinding compound | Butler stocks Permatex valve grinding compound in a 3 oz tube for lapping a valve to its seat and clearing burrs, carbon and corrosion. |
| Seals | if the guide has been machined, match the seal to the head. Butler's .500" Viton seal is the cast iron size and the .530" is typically the Edelbrock aluminum size. |
| Springs and retainers | if you changed valve length, recheck install height with the new valve before reusing the old spring and retainer combination. |
Have the casting number off the head when you call. That one number narrows the valve length down faster than anything else.
