By The Casting Number — Cast Iron Heads for Pontiac V8s
Valves for stock Pontiac cast iron heads are listed by casting number for a reason: the factory used several different valve lengths across the D-port castings, and the length decides your spring installed height and your pushrod length. A 326 head, a 1964-66 389/421 head and a later 400 head do not share a valve.

1. Valve Length Follows The Casting Family
Butler's listings group the cast iron heads by the valve length they take. Find your group before you look at head diameter.
| 4.910" length | the Pontiac 326 stock heads, which Butler lists with a 1.60" exhaust and a 1.90" intake, noting the stock intake size is 1.88". |
| 4.980" length | the 1964-66 389 and 421 heads, which Butler notes are slightly longer than stock, along with 4X, 6X and 5C castings and the 1971 group of 96, 7K3, 197, 7F6, 16 SD and 64 heads. |
| 5.095" intake and 5.110" exhaust | the 670, 16, 62, 13, 12, 48 and 061 heads. Butler also lists a 1.96" by 5.095" intake for 400 and 350 heads such as 17, 18, 46 and 47 in the 1968-1970 model range. |
| 5.213" intake and 5.230" exhaust | the Ram Air II and Ram Air IV heads. |
2. The Longer Valve Gotcha
This is the most useful note in Butler's own product copy, and it explains why people end up with a valvetrain that will not adjust.
| What Butler says | the 5.110" exhaust and 5.095" intake valves may be used in 4X, 6X, 96, 7K3 and 5C heads for taller spring height, but you must use a longer pushrod. |
| Why anyone does it | a longer valve raises the retainer, which gives more installed height and lets a bigger spring fit in a casting that otherwise runs out of room. |
| What it costs you | everything above the valve moves. Check pushrod length with an adjustable checker, re-verify rocker geometry and re-check retainer-to-seal clearance before you commit. |
3. Sizes And Seat Angles
Two valves the same length are not interchangeable if the head diameter or the seat angle is different.
| Common intake sizes | Butler lists 1.90", 1.92", 1.96", 2.11" and larger intakes across the cast iron groups, so a 326 head and a 400 head are not shopping in the same place. |
| Common exhaust sizes | 1.60", 1.66" and 1.77". The 1.77" exhaust is the usual upgrade on 4X, 6X and 5C castings that came with the smaller valve. |
| 30 degree versus 45 degree | several of the cast iron intake valves are ground on a 30 degree seat and others on 45 degree. The valve has to match the angle your machinist cuts the seat to, so decide this before the heads go on the machine. |
| Matched kits | Butler's Ferrea valve kits pair an intake and exhaust against named castings, for example a 1.77" by 4.980" 45 degree exhaust with a 2.11" by 4.980" 30 degree intake for the 1971 casting group, or a 1.77" by 5.230" with a 2.11" by 5.213" for Ram Air II and Ram Air IV heads. |
4. Performance Series Or Race Series
| 5000 Performance Series | one-piece forged stainless, CNC machined, hard chrome stems and hard tips, designed by Ferrea for street performance engines and mildly modified drag and oval track use. Many feature flat combustion chamber faces to help increase compression in naturally aspirated engines. |
| 6000 Ultimate Race Series | EV8 stainless with friction-welded hard tips and swirl polished heads, built for high spring pressures and roller cams. Butler stocks 6000 series valves for the cast iron groups in 1.770" by 5.110" and 2.110" by 5.095". |
| Which one you need | a stock rebuild or a mild hydraulic cam is squarely 5000 series territory. A solid roller with heavy springs is where the 6000 series earns its keep. |
5. Rebuilding Your Own Castings
| Head Builder Kit | if the castings are good but you do not know what parts you need, Butler's cast iron Head Builder Kit includes Ferrea stainless intake and exhaust valves with stock install height, matching Crower, Edelbrock, DHP or Comp springs matched specifically to your cam specs, chromoly retainers and locks, PEP valve stem seals for machined valve guides and a shim kit. |
| Singles for damage | Ferrea valves are also sold each, so one bent valve does not cost you a set. |
| Finish the job | plan on guides, seats, seals, springs and locks at the same time. A new valve in a worn guide is a short-lived repair. |
