Pontiac V8 428 Super Stroker Rotating Assemblies

All the Stroke It Will Take — 428 Super Stroker Rotating Assemblies for Pontiac V8s

Super stroker is Butler's term for the longest crank a block will accept, and on a 428 that is a 4.500" stroke. It is the top of the 428 range and the point where the block is carrying as much stroke as a factory Pontiac casting reasonably can.

Butler builds a balanced 487-495 ci rotating assembly for the 428 block at that stroke, and Eagle lists a flat-top 495 ci 4.500" stroker kit for 428 and 455 blocks alongside it.

More About 428 Super Stroker Rotating Assemblies

1. What is on this page

Butler 487-495 ci, 4.500" strokeA balanced rotating assembly for the 428 block, built around genuine Ross forged pistons on Butler's exclusive true-Pontiac forging with Total Seal rings, bearings selected for clearance and Butler Process internal balancing. The displacement is a range because it moves with the finished bore.
Eagle flat top 495 ci, 4.500" strokeA fixed combination listed for 428 and 455 blocks, with forged 4340 rods, ARP 8740 capscrew rod bolts, forged Mahle pistons and file-fit plasma-moly rings. Supplied unbalanced, like all Eagle kits.

2. What a 4.500" crank asks of a 428

This is the most demanding combination the 428 block sees, and the block gets checked before anything is ordered.

Cylinder wall thicknessA 428 is a valuable casting and not endlessly reborable. Sonic check it before choosing a bore at the top of the range.
ClearanceLong-stroke Pontiac combinations need the block checked for rod and counterweight clearance. Mock it up rather than assuming the crank swings free.
BalancingEvery assembly must be balanced before it runs. Butler balancing weighs and pin-fits rods and pistons, computer balances the crank to the assembly, and ships a balance card. Internally balanced means a neutral flexplate or flywheel and a neutral harmonic balancer.

3. Making the displacement count

CompressionOn the Butler assembly the piston is designed around your chamber cc and target compression ratio. Custom dish pistons run a 10 to 12 week lead time.
Top endNearly 500 cubic inches will out-breathe a stock port every time. Plan the heads, cam and intake with the assembly, not after it.

If you are not sure whether your 428 should carry this much stroke, call before the machine work starts. We would rather talk it through than have a good block cut for a combination it cannot support.
