Pontiac V8 428 Engine Rebuilder Assemblies
A 428 That Stays a 428 — 428 Engine Rebuilder Assemblies for Pontiac V8s
428 Engine Rebuilder Assemblies are the shelf for a 428 that is going back in the car as a 428. The parts are Butler-selected to work together rather than gathered from three suppliers, which is what keeps a rebuild predictable instead of a series of clearance surprises.
Butler covers it with a 428 re-ring kit, complete rebuild kits in cast hypereutectic or forged pistons, and a balanced 433-440 ci rotating assembly on a 4.000" stroke with long rods, Total Seal rings and in-house balancing.

More About 428 Engine Rebuilder Assemblies
1. Which kit fits the teardown
Four products, and the state of the block and pistons decides between them.
| 428 Re-Ring Kit | Rings, rod bearings, main bearings and a complete engine gasket kit. For a 428 whose bores and pistons are still in spec and only needs to be freshened up. |
| 428 Rebuild Kit, cast hypereutectic pistons | Pistons, rings, bearings and the complete gasket kit as one Butler-selected package, for a rebuild that will live on pump gas. |
| 428 Rebuild Kit, forged pistons | The same complete kit with a forged piston, when the engine is going to see more than stock use. |
| 433-440 ci balanced rotating assembly, 4.000" stroke | A new forged 4.000" crank, forged flat top Ross pistons with dish or dome available, bushed and full-float H-beam 6.700" rods, 990 wrist pins, Total Seal Classic Race rings, Federal Mogul or Clevite Performance bearings and Butler Process internal balancing. |
2. Why a 428 rebuilder assembly is 433-440 ci
This is the detail that surprises people coming from a 400. The rebuilder assembly on this page is a 4.000" stroke package, and combined with the 428's bore that puts the finished engine at 433-440 cubic inches rather than back at 428.
| The range moves with the bore | Bore options start at .030" over so the block cleans up and the rings seat within spec. Where in the 433-440 window you land depends on how much the cylinders needed. |
| Sonic check a 428 | These blocks are valuable and not endlessly reborable. Have the cylinder walls measured before choosing the bore, not after the pistons arrive. |
| Hone to the parts | Butler recommends having the pistons in hand when the cylinders are honed so piston-to-wall clearance is set off the actual pistons. |
3. Crank and balance decisions
| Cast or forged | A new cast steel crank is a sound upgrade over a 30-plus-year-old factory piece and is recommended for street engines without power adders. A 4340 forged crank costs more now and saves a second teardown if power goes up later. |
| Balancing | The rotating assembly is internally balanced in our shop, with the rods and pistons weighed and pin-fitted and the crank computer balanced to the assembly. It ships with a balance card. |
| Matching parts | Internally balanced means the flexplate or flywheel and the harmonic balancer both need to be neutral. |
If the goal is originality, the re-ring or rebuild kit keeps it simple. If the block is coming out for boring anyway, the balanced assembly settles the crank, pistons and balance work in one order.
