Pontiac V8 428 Stroker Rotating Assemblies

Stroke on Top of Stroke — 428 Stroker Rotating Assemblies for Pontiac V8s

A 428 stroker starts from a block that already has stroke, so the same crank that makes a 400 into a 461 puts a 428 in the mid-460s. That is the appeal of this shelf: big displacement without the extra bore a 400 would need to get there.

Butler carries Butler/Ross balanced rotating assemblies for the 428 block at 4.210" and 4.250" stroke, plus Eagle Competition and Street/Strip stroker kits at 461, 463 and 468 ci in flat top and -22cc dish.

More About 428 Stroker Rotating Assemblies

1. The Butler assemblies

Both are long-rod, internally balanced packages built around genuine Ross forged pistons on Butler's exclusive true-Pontiac forging.

4.210" stroke, 456-463 ciNew cast or forged 4.210" crank, forged flat top or dish pistons, press-fit I-beam or bushed full-float H-beam 6.625" rods, 980 wrist pins, Total Seal Classic Race rings and Federal Mogul or Clevite Performance bearings.
4.250" stroke, 460-467 ci, full customNew cast or forged 4.250" crank, forged flat top Ross pistons with dish or dome available, bushed full-float H-beam 6.800" rods, 990 pins, Total Seal rings and rod bearings selected for proper clearance here.
4.250" stroke, 460-467 ci, stocked boresThe same displacement built on a choice of 4.150", 4.155", 4.160" or 4.181" bore using custom Butler/Ross forged -8cc flat top pistons we keep in stock, or a custom dish milled in our shop. Offered in .030, .035, .040 and .060 over.
Engine builder packageA 461-474 ci rotating assembly and top-end package on a 4.250" stroke and 4.150-4.211" bore with Ross forged pistons, Edelbrock RPM heads and a Comp hydraulic roller cam, sized for 10.2-10.4:1 on 91-93 octane. Block not included; it is built for your block and your machinist.

2. The Eagle kits and the shared 428/455 bore

Several Eagle kits on this page are listed for the 428 and the 455 together. That is a bore coincidence, not a licence to ignore the difference between the blocks.

4.185" boreOn a 428 that is .065" over; on a 455 it is only .030" over. Both land at the same displacement, but a .065"-over 428 has far less cylinder wall left. Sonic check before ordering.
461 ciA Street/Strip kit with -22cc dish pistons on a 4.250" stroke, listed specifically for the 428 block.
463 ciFlat top kits at a 4.185" bore, offered in Competition and Street/Strip.
468 ciThe most common combination here — 4.185" bore on a 4.250" stroke, in flat top or -22cc dish, in both Competition and Street/Strip.

3. Competition or Street/Strip

Competition kitsForged steel crankshaft, forged 4340 H-beam rods with 7/16" ARP 8740 capscrew rod bolts, forged 4032 Mahle pistons, plasma-moly file-fit rings and performance bearings, designed for internal balance with no heavy metal needed.
Street/Strip (FSI) kitsCast steel crankshaft with Butler's exclusive forged 4340 FSI steel I-beam rods, described as lighter and stronger than 5140, with the same 7/16" ARP 8740 capscrew bolts, forged 4032 Mahle pistons and plasma-moly file-fit rings.
File-fit ringsAll Eagle kits contain file-fit rings, so the gaps get set at the bench.

4. Before you order

BalancingEvery rotating assembly Butler sells must be balanced before installation, regardless of brand. Eagle kits ship unbalanced; Butler's shop balancing weighs and pin-fits the rods and pistons, computer balances the crank to the assembly and documents it on a balance card.
Neutral balance partsInternally balanced assemblies require a neutral-balanced flexplate or flywheel and a neutral harmonic balancer.
CompressionOn a Butler assembly the piston is designed to your chamber cc and target compression. Custom dish pistons run a 10 to 12 week lead time, so order the pistons early in the build.

If your 428 is already at a common bore and you want a known combination quickly, an Eagle kit or the stocked-bore Butler assembly is the direct route. If the block is unusual or the compression target is specific, the full custom assembly is the one built for that.
