455 Block

Pontiac V8 455 Block

The Most Cubic Inches Pontiac Ever Cast — 455 Block for Pontiac V8s

The 455 is the largest factory Pontiac V8, and it starts with the biggest bore and the 3.25" main journal, so it needs the least help to make cubic inches. Stroke it and you are into 500 cubic inch territory on an original casting.

These Short Block Kits (SBK) use a Butler supplied 455 block and run from 462 to 501 cubic inches across three strokes, with Ross Racing pistons in the 4.181" to 4.211" bore range, Total Seal file fit rings and performance bearings. No camshaft, no heads, shipped ready to assemble.

More About 455 Block

1. Displacement by stroke

Because the 455 already has the bore, each stroke step lands somewhere useful without exotic parts.

4.210" stroke, 462-469 cicast or forged crank with 6.625" I-beam rods, press fit and not assembled, with optional bushed H-beam rods. The mildest of the three and still over 460 cubic inches.
4.250" stroke, 467-474 cithe middle option and the most common 455 stroker combination.
4.500" stroke, 494-501 cithe big one. Four-bolt billet main caps are recommended at this stroke.

2. Bore and compression on a 455

The 455 runs the largest pistons in the Pontiac line, and that changes how compression behaves compared with a 400 based build.

Ross Racing pistons, 4.181" to 4.211"flat top as standard, dish or dome available at additional charge.
Compression climbs fastButler's 455 compression tables run from 4.000" stroke through 4.500" against 72cc, 87cc and 96cc chambers. On a big bore and a long stroke, a small chamber gets you into race fuel quickly, so pick the head with the piston rather than after it.
Rings and bearingsTotal Seal file fit rings gapped at assembly, performance rod and main bearings, internally balanced as a complete assembly.
3.25" mainscrank, bearing and rear main seal part numbers follow the 421 and 428 side of the catalog.

3. Prep and what the kit does not include

Each 455 block is cleaned, magnafluxed, sonic tested, completely deburred, bored and honed with a torque plate, line honed with ARP main studs and square decked, with cam bearings and brass freeze plugs installed. Paint is an option; without it the block is oiled down before bagging.
