1. Find your year and chassis
These tanks are year specific because the cars were. Butler's coverage runs across four body lines, and the breaks are not always where you would guess.

2. The detail that catches people out
Two tanks that look interchangeable in a catalog are not, and it comes down to what is welded onto them.
| With or without filler neck | The 1968 GTO and LeMans tank, which Butler lists as fitting 1968-1970 GTO, LeMans and Tempest, comes without a filler neck and you must attach your own. The 1969-1970 GTO and LeMans tank comes with the filler neck and vent pipe. |
| Check before you order | If you are reusing an original neck, confirm it is serviceable. If you are not, buy the tank that includes one. |

3. What to replace while the tank is down
Dropping a tank is a job you only want to do once, so order the supporting parts with it.
| Sending unit | A new tank with a fifty-year-old sender in it is a false economy. Match the ohm range to the gauge, and if the car has an electric pump and a bypass regulator, look at a hi flow 1/2" outlet and return sender instead. |

| Filters and line | If the old tank was full of scale, the lines and filters downstream of it probably are too. |
4. When a stock tank is the wrong answer
There is one case where you should stop and look at the other tank subcategories before ordering.
| Going EFI | A stock tank has no EFI baffling and no reservoir tray, and it will starve an in-tank pump under acceleration and cornering. If EFI is in the plan, buy an EFI-ready tank now rather than dropping the tank again later. |
| Adding an in-tank pump to a carbureted car | You can retrofit a module into a stock tank, but the tank depth has to suit the module, and the baffling issue does not go away just because there is a carburetor on top. |
| Adding a return line | A stock tank has no return provision. A hi flow sending unit with a 1/2" return tube is how you get one without cutting the tank. |
