Pontiac V8 67-69 F-Body, 1st Gen Firebird
Clearance First — 67-69 F-Body, 1st Gen Firebird for Pontiac V8s
The 1967-69 Firebird is the tightest header install of any Pontiac chassis. The first-gen F-body puts the front subframe, the steering column and the stock oil filter right where a full-length primary wants to go, so a set of headers here is never just a bolt-on. Plan the supporting changes before the car goes on the lift.
Butler carries Doug's Headers four-tube full-length sets for 326-455 first-gen cars in both D-port and round port, in black painted, metallic ceramic and all-stainless finishes. The D-port set also covers 1970-74 X-body cars.

More About 67-69 F-Body, 1st Gen Firebird
1. What a first-gen F-body header demands
Two things on this car are non-negotiable, and both are called out in Doug's own fitment notes for the 1 3/4" D-port set.
| A 90 degree oil filter housing | the stock filter hangs into the primary tube path on a 67-69 Firebird. Doug's states the D-port headers require a 90 degree oil filter housing. Source that before the headers arrive, not after. |
| The locking steering column | Doug's notes that a locking steering column, if the car is equipped with one, has to be removed or modified. That is a steering job, not a header job, so budget the time. |
| 1970-74 X-body | the same D-port casting is listed for 1970-74 X-body Ventura cars, which is useful if you are building a Pontiac-powered Ventura or Phoenix. |
2. D-port or round port, and how big
Your cylinder head exhaust port shape picks the flange. Do not order on displacement alone.
| D-port, 1 3/4" primary, 3" collector | the right choice for a stock or mildly built 326-455 with factory-shape D-port iron. The smaller primary keeps velocity up where a street Pontiac actually lives. |
| Round port, 1 7/8" primary, 3 1/2" collector | for Ram Air style round port heads and for a bigger-cam, higher-rpm build. Stepping up a tube size on a mild engine trades away low-speed exhaust velocity, so match it to the combination. |
3. Finish
| Black painted | Doug's standard headers come raw or black painted and are ready for your own coating. This is paint, not a thermal barrier. |
| Metallic ceramic | pre-polished, then coated for corrosion and heat resistance that Doug's rates to 1400 degrees. On a car with this little room between the header and everything else, keeping heat in the pipe is worth the money. |
| All stainless | the same 3/8" thick machined flanges and CNC mandrel-bent tubes in stainless, for a car that gets driven in weather and kept for good. |
Every set uses 3/8" thick machined flanges so the flange does not warp and long transition collectors. If you are not sure which heads are on the engine, pull a valve cover or call the shop and we will sort out port shape before you order.
