Pontiac V8 Cast Iron, Later Style 65-79, NON RA4/SD 455
The Standard Port — Cast Iron, Later Style 65-79, NON RA4/SD 455 for Pontiac V8s
This is the standard port intake gasket group and the one most Pontiac owners need: 1965 through 1979 cast iron heads and manifolds, excluding Ram Air IV and the Super Duty 455. The port is the factory D-port opening, commonly 2.20" x 1.18" at .060" thick.
Butler stocks these as complete sets that include heat crossover block-off plates, restrictor plates and the intake-to-timing-cover seal, from Butler, Fel-Pro, Edelbrock and Mr. Gasket, plus a plain stock replacement set for a straight factory rebuild.

More About Cast Iron, Later Style 65-79, NON RA4/SD 455
1. What fits here, and what does not
This group covers the great majority of Pontiac V8s, but the exclusions matter.
| Covered | 1965-79 cast iron heads and manifolds — the 326, 350, 389, 400, 421, 428 and 455 running factory D-port castings. |
| Not covered | Ram Air IV and Super Duty 455. Those are large port engines and take the RA4 and large port gaskets instead. |
| Not covered | 1964 and earlier castings. Those belong in the early 57-64 group. |
| Port size | Butler's standard sets run a 2.20" x 1.18" port at .060" thickness. Mr. Gasket's composite version is cut at 2.06" x 1.14" and .0625" thick. |
2. The heat crossover decision
This is the real choice on this page, and it is where the stock rebuild and the performance build separate.
| What the block-off plates do | the exhaust heat crossover passes exhaust gas under the intake to warm it. Blocking it keeps heat out of the manifold and out of the carburetor, which means a cooler, denser charge on a performance engine. |
| What you give up | the crossover exists for cold-start drivability and choke operation. On a daily-driven car in a cold climate, leaving it open is the right call. |
| Restrictor plates | Butler's and Fel-Pro's sets include restrictor plates as well as full block-off plates, so you can cut the crossover down rather than close it entirely. |
| Metal reinforced | Butler's own set uses metal reinforced heat crossover block-off plates — a step up from plain plates that can burn through. |
3. What else comes in the set
Read the contents before you order anything separately.
| Intake to timing cover seal | the Butler and Fel-Pro sets include this seal. It is the joint that weeps down behind the water pump and never gets diagnosed. |
| Distributor gasket | Mr. Gasket's Ultra Seal set includes one; other sets do not. Check, or add one from individual gaskets. |
| Silicone beading | the Ultra Seal composite gaskets carry silicone beading around each intake and water port on both sides, so no separate gasket sealer is required. |
| Stock replacement | if you want the plain gasket with nothing extra, Butler stocks a straight 1965-and-up stock replacement set. |
For a stock rebuild, the plain 1965-and-up set with the crossover left open does exactly what the factory intended. For a cam-and-carb Pontiac that sees warm weather, use a set with the metal reinforced block-off plates and keep the heat out of the manifold.
