Pontiac V8 Federal Mogul Rod Bearings
Sized to Your Crank — Federal Mogul Rod Bearings for Pontiac V8s
Federal Mogul rod bearings are the workhorse answer for a Pontiac bottom end — the set that goes in a stock rebuild and the set that goes in plenty of Butler-built street engines. Butler's own product copy says it plainly: Butler Performance uses only the highest quality bearings made by Clevite 77 and Federal Mogul.
The range here covers all three rod journal sizes a Pontiac builder runs into. The 1555CPA series serves 350, 389, 400, 421 and 455 engines, the 7050CH series is the Pontiac performance rod bearing, and the 7200CH series covers the 2.200" big-block journal used on stroker cranks.

More About Federal Mogul Rod Bearings
1. Which journal are you on
Everything on this page divides on rod journal diameter first. Get that wrong and nothing else matters.
| Pontiac journal, stock and mild | The 1555CPA series is listed for 350, 389, 400, 421 and 455 cubic inch engines and is the straightforward rebuild bearing, sold as a set. |
| Pontiac journal, performance | The 7050CH series is Federal Mogul's Pontiac performance rod bearing. It is the step up from the plain rebuild set while staying on the factory journal. |
| 2.200" big-block journal | The 7200CH series is the BBC performance rod bearing for the 2.200" journal. If your stroker crank was ordered with big-block rod journals — which is most 4.250" and 4.500" Pontiac cranks — this is the family you are shopping. |
| 2.100" journal | Federal Mogul also lists a 2.100" journal rod bearing here, chamfered on one side, for combinations that went that direction. |
2. Undersizes and a turned crank
Rod bearings are sold in sizes because crankshafts get ground. The size on the box has to match what the grinder actually did.
| Standard through .040 | The 1555CPA line is stocked standard, .010, .020, .030 and .040. Order to the grind, not to the engine. |
| For turned cranks | Federal Mogul's own description of the .010 performance Pontiac bearing calls it out as the size for turned cranks — which is exactly what a .010/.010 crank needs. |
| 2.200" journal sizes | The 7200CH family is stocked standard, .010 and .020, plus a .001 undersize and a .001 extra-clearance variant for builders who want to move oil clearance a thousandth in either direction. |
| A-suffix sets | Federal Mogul also lists A-suffix versions in both the 7100 and 7200 families; call if you are not sure which of the two a particular build needs. |
3. Where Federal Mogul sits against the other lines
Butler stocks three rod bearing lines and they are not interchangeable in intent.
| Federal Mogul | Broad size coverage across all three journals, and the deepest range of undersizes for a crank that has been ground more than once. |
| Clevite | The series-letter system — H, P, V, M — lets you pick eccentricity and groove pattern deliberately. See the Clevite rod bearing page for that. |
| King Racing | The bi-metal HP silicon aluminum and tri-metal CP lines, for builders who want a specific bearing material rather than a specific size. |
4. What to have in front of you when you order
Two numbers and one answer make this a short phone call.
| The journal diameter | Measured, not assumed. 2.250" Pontiac, 2.200" big-block, or 2.100". |
| The undersize | Whatever the crank was ground to, in thousandths. |
| The rods | Aftermarket rods sometimes want a different bearing than a stock rod in the same engine, so say what rods are going in. |
If the crank is at the machine shop, wait for the finished sizes before ordering. Guessing an undersize is the fastest way to end up with a set of bearings you cannot use.
