Keep the Oil in the Pan — Windage Trays & Crank Scrapers for Pontiac V8s
A windage tray keeps the oil in the pan from being whipped into the crankshaft, and a crank scraper strips the oil film off the counterweights before it gets there. Together they steady oil pressure and free up power the rotating assembly was spending on churning oil.
Butler stocks the Tomahawk three-quarter length tray and its spacer kit for stock blocks, a louvered tray that fits stock and aftermarket blocks including the IA2, and Butler crank scrapers cut for 3.75", 4.210"/4.250" and 4.500" stroke cranks.

1. Which Tray Fits Your Block
The two trays Butler stocks are not interchangeable. Stroke and block decide it.
| Tomahawk three-quarter length | For stock Pontiac blocks. 4.25" stroke cranks may require spacing, and it is not for use with a 4.5" stroke. The number 2 and number 4 main caps must be threaded. It is not intended for aftermarket blocks, which take heavy modification. A spacer kit of 3/4" flat stock in 3/16" thickness with bolts, lock washers and spacers sets it off the caps. |
| Louvered tray | Designed for the IA2 block but it works on all Pontiac V8s, stock or aftermarket, with splayed or regular main caps, two bolt or four bolt, and clears all strokes up to 4.500". Butler's note is that it gives better oil control and return than glue-on trays and will not crack like a factory tray with the redirect curve. |
2. Crank Scrapers Are Stroke Specific
A scraper runs close to the counterweights, so there is one per stroke family. Order by the crank you are running, not by displacement.

| Pairing | Butler recommends a crank scraper with the louvered tray. Both are fitted to the rotating assembly on the bench. |
3. Fitment Before You Button It Up
Trays are fitted parts. Plan on mocking up and bending.
| Threaded caps | Both trays mount at the number 2 and number 4 main caps, which must be threaded. Do not mount the louvered tray to the center cap only. |
| Shimming | The louvered tray may need shims to clear a stroke and rod combination. Use rectangular stock, not washers. Shimming more than 1/4" may not let the oil pan fit. Turn the crank and check, and expect to straighten louvers or bend the tray to clear certain oil pumps. |
| Splayed caps | With splayed main caps the bottom and side of the tray must be cut to clear. |
| Dipstick conflict | The louvered tray will not work with the stock lower dipstick tube. The tube, if used, must be welded to the external tube, or a bracket welded or bolted to the tray. |
| Bolt heads | Regular 5/16 bolts with a 1/2 hex head will not let a socket fit. Allen socket bolts, pan head bolts, or 5/16 carb studs with 12 point nuts all work. Grade 8 lock washers are recommended. |
Buy the tray and scraper with the crank, fit them on the bench, and settle the dipstick tube question in the same session.
