Oil Pans and Pickups
Pontiac V8 Oil Pans and Pickups
Pan First, Pickup Second — Oil Pans and Pickups for Pontiac V8s
Oil pans and pickups are a matched pair, not two separate purchases. The pan decides how much oil you carry, how well it stays over the pickup under braking and cornering, and whether the engine clears the crossmember and exhaust in your car. The pickup has to reach the bottom of that particular sump and no further.
Butler stocks Canton, Milodon, Moroso and RPC pans from stock-appearing six-quart baffled replacements through T-sump road race pans, with the correct pickup for each, plus oil pan reinforcement plates and magnetic drain plugs.

More About Oil Pans and Pickups
1. Stock Replacement Pans
If the car keeps its factory chassis and exhaust, a stock-dimension pan is still the right answer.
| Canton baffled six quart | Stock appearing, fits all Pontiac V8s in production chassis, comes unplated, and uses the M-54S pickup with a 3/4" tube. Keeps stock dimensions and capacity, adds a slosh baffle and magnetic drain plug. Canton's note on filling: a dry engine takes seven quarts to fill every passage, so you pour six at an oil change, fill to the full mark, crank it and recheck. |
| RPC stock baffled six quart | Fits all Pontiac V8 blocks, 1961-81, with an internal baffle, a side exit drain plug and a three-tab rear design. It sits .25" shorter in height at the crossmember than other aftermarket pans, which matters in a tight chassis. Some bolt holes may need to be slotted. Offered raw or zinc plated. |
| Milodon factory replacement | Six quarts plus filter. Butler's own experience with this baffle design is that you must run a windage tray with it to prevent oil pressure fluctuation from windage — budget for the tray when you buy the pan. |
2. High Capacity and Race Pans
More oil, better control, and a sump shape matched to the car. Several of these are chassis specific, so read the notes.
| Canton 8" high capacity | A side pouch adds capacity while keeping considerable crossmember clearance. The sump is 8" deep by 11-1/2" wide and it requires the Canton 15-401 pickup. |
| Canton 8" high capacity road race | A T-sump pan for road race competition, 8" deep by 14" wide by 7-1/2" long with a seven quart system capacity, also on the 15-401 pickup. Canton calls for 3" between the right side of a stock pan and the exhaust to clear the T sump. |
| Canton shallow road race | A low profile pan for ground clearance with a 7" deep, 10-1/2" long sump and a six quart system capacity, built for 1970-81 Trans Am and Firebird. It fits all popular chassis except GTOs and 1967-69 Firebirds, cannot be used with some stock exhaust systems, and takes the 15-451 pickup. Triple trap door baffle and a provision for a pan mounted dipstick. |
| Canton road race/drag, early GTO | Six and a half to seven quarts with baffle and trap doors, cut for the early GTO, on the 15-401 pickup. Slight modification may be required in a 1967-69 Firebird. |
| Milodon low profile | Seven quarts plus filter on an 8" sump, with oil control baffles and maximum available ground clearance. Uses the Milodon 18425 pickup with a 3/4" inlet. Not for 1970-74 Firebirds. |
| Milodon GTO road race | For 1964-73 GTO and LeMans with 389-455. Seven quarts plus filter, 7-3/4" sump, and an angled sump front so the engine and transmission go in together past the crossmember. Will not fit a Firebird chassis. Uses the 18525 pickup. |
| Moroso deep sump | Eight quart steel pan in clear zinc, 9-3/4" deep, for 301-455 in 1967-81 Firebird and 1964-87 mid and full-size chassis. |
3. Picking the Pickup and Setting the Clearance
This is where most oiling problems on a fresh Pontiac come from. The pickup is specific to the sump, and the gap at the bottom is not optional.
| Match the part number | Canton's 15-401 serves the 15-400, 15-452 and 15-444 pans; the 15-451 serves the 15-450 and can also be used with stock pans. Milodon's 18425 goes with the low profile pan, the 18525 with the road race pans. Moroso pickups are cut for specific Moroso pans. |
| Clearance | Butler recommends 1/8" to 1/4" of oil pan to pickup clearance, and it must be checked with all pumps and pickups regardless of which oil pan you run. Assemble it dry, measure, and correct before the pan goes on for the last time. |
| Thick oil pump plates | When you use the thicker 1/4" oil pump plates such as the Butler Pro Series oil pumps, slight modification of the pickup tab may be necessary. Bend the tab up and elongate the mounting hole. |
| Pump compatibility | Canton pickups are cut for a high pressure or race oil pump with a 3/4" inlet. Moroso says to bolt the pickup, then braze or weld it to the pump. |
4. Pan Hardware
Small parts that stop leaks and cracks.
| Reinforcement plates | Butler's reinforcement brackets mount at the rear corners of the pan on 1964-81 Pontiac V8 cars, sold in pairs. |
| Magnetic drain plug | A 1/2"-20 plug with a copper washer collects steel particles so you can see what the engine is shedding. |
Decide the chassis question first, then the depth you can live with under the car, then order the pickup that pan calls for. Mock it up and check the pickup gap and right side exhaust clearance.
