1. The Four Sections and What Goes in Each
Work through them in this order and the parts will agree with each other.
| Oil Pans and Pickups | Stock-appearing six quart pans through high capacity and road race sumps, each with the pickup cut for it. Start here, because the pan choice drives everything else. |
| Windage Trays & Crank Scrapers | Three-quarter length and louvered trays plus scrapers cut to stroke. These get fitted with the rotating assembly on the bench. |
| Dip Sticks and Tubes | Lower tubes, block tubes, A/C upper extensions, correct-length dipsticks and complete Butler kits. |
| Oil System Components | Filter housings with the factory bypass, header clearance adapters, remote filter plates, brackets and filters, restrictors and drain plugs. |
2. Where the Four Sections Collide
These parts share the same few inches of space, and the conflicts are always the same ones.
| Pan to pickup | Butler recommends 1/8" to 1/4" of oil pan to pickup clearance, and it must be checked with all pumps and pickups regardless of the oil pan you are running. |
| Tray to dipstick | A louvered windage tray will not work with the stock lower dipstick tube. You either modify the no-tray lower tube, weld a bracket to the tray, or run an external pan-mounted dipstick with a Canton pan that has the bung for it. |
| Tray to pan | Shimming a tray more than 1/4" may stop the oil pan fitting, so the tray, the scraper and the pan all have to be checked together with the crank turning. |
| Housing to exhaust | Long branch and Ram Air manifolds on a 1967-69 Firebird require the 90 degree oil filter housing, and any filter re-clocking adapter requires it too. |
Buy the pan, pickup, tray, scraper and dipstick tubes as one order and mock them up together. Every one of those clearances is easy on an engine stand and miserable once the engine is in the car.
