Pontiac V8 V-Belt Pulleys

Keep the Belts, Lose the Stampings — V-Belt Pulleys for Pontiac V8s

V-belt pulleys are the right answer when the car should keep its period look or when a serpentine system is more change than the build needs. Billet replacements fix the real weakness of the factory parts: stamped steel pulleys flex and run out of true, and a two-piece crank pulley set is the worst offender.

Butler groups them by position — crank, water pump, alternator and power steering pulleys plus complete pulley kits — with parts from Ram Air Restorations, March Performance, CVF and Butler.

More About V-Belt Pulleys

1. The Five Groups

Each position has its own section, so you can replace one piece or the whole front.

Crank pulleysThe largest group, split by the 1968-70 and 1971-and-later groove offsets, in two and three groove versions and in underdriven versions for both three-bolt and four-bolt dampers.
Water pump pulleysSingle and double groove billet pulleys covering 1964-67, 1968-70, the 1969 1/2-1970 cars with the 4.50" pump, and 1971-and-later in A/C and non-A/C diameters. One of the 1969 1/2-1970 pulleys doubles as a 4" to 4.5" conversion pulley. A shim kit is stocked for alignment.
Alternator pulleysSingle groove billet pulleys in billet, gold and black finishes, plus a 5.0" diameter underdriven version.
Power steering pulleysCovering 1965-69 with A/C at 7.3" diameter, the single groove 1965-74 fitment for 1965-69 non-A/C and all 1970-74, a 1970 Firebird and Trans Am specific pulley, and a press fit 1975-79 pulley.
Pulley kitsCrank and water pump sets for 1968-70 that also serve 1964-68 eight bolt to eleven bolt conversions, March three-piece sets for 1971 and later, and CVF alternator and power steering bracket kits.

2. Getting the Set to Line Up

Billet pulleys are only better than stamped steel if they are the right ones.

Which eraThe 1968-70 pulleys and the 1971-and-later pulleys have different groove offsets. Match the pulleys to the bracketry, not to the engine's displacement.
How many groovesA/C cars run an extra groove. The three groove crank pulleys locate all three grooves in the stock position.
Which damperFour-bolt pulleys suit factory 1968-81 balancers. Three-bolt pulleys are for ATI and TCI style aftermarket dampers, and on those the pulley mounting surface sits .200" further out than stock, so brackets and accessories have to be re-spaced.
Which water pumpA 4" pump and a 4-1/2" pump take different pulleys, and the 1969 1/2-1970 pulleys are specific to the 4.50" pump.

3. Kits or Pieces

Both work; the kit removes the guesswork.

Buy the kitwhen you are replacing the whole front at once or converting an early eight bolt water pump car to the eleven bolt arrangement. The crank, water pump and alternator pulleys come cut to the same era and finish.
Buy pieceswhen you are adding an accessory, chasing a belt that will not stay on, or replacing one cracked stamped pulley. Order by year, groove count and damper bolt pattern, and use the shim kit to fine tune.

Billet pulleys run truer and their deeper grooves hold a belt better than the stampings they replace. The choice is straightforward once you have pinned down year, grooves, damper and pump size.
