Pontiac V8 Pulleys & Serpentine Belt Systems
The Front of the Engine — Pulleys & Serpentine Belt Systems for Pontiac V8s
Pulleys & Serpentine Belt Systems covers the front of the Pontiac V8: what drives the water pump, the alternator, the power steering pump and the A/C compressor, and what holds all of it in alignment. It is also where the most common fitment mistakes happen, because Pontiac changed pulley offsets, water pump sizes and balancer bolt patterns across the years.
Butler stocks March Performance all-inclusive serpentine systems and conversion kits, CVF Wraptor systems and bracket kits, billet V-belt pulleys from Ram Air Restorations and Butler, and the alternators, pumps and belts that go with them.

More About Pulleys & Serpentine Belt Systems
1. Three Ways to Turn the Accessories
Pick the approach first. Mixing pieces between these three is where alignment problems start.
| Stay V-belt | Replace the stamped steel factory pulleys with billet, in the groove count your car needs. The V-Belt Pulleys section splits into crank, water pump, alternator and power steering pulleys plus complete pulley kits, so you can do one piece or the whole front at once. |
| Convert to serpentine | The serpentine conversion kits move an existing accessory layout onto a single ribbed belt without replacing every component. |
| All-inclusive serpentine | March's Style Track, Revolver, Ultra and Sport Track systems and the CVF Wraptor arrive as a complete front drive for Pontiac 326-455, with versions built around what you actually run — A/C, power steering and alternator, alternator and power steering only, no power steering at all, and chassis-specific versions such as 1967-69 Firebird or 1970-and-up GTO, Firebird and Grand Prix with a GM Type II remote pump. Finishes run clear, black, black onyx and chrome. |
2. What Has to Line Up
Whichever route you take, the same handful of facts decide the parts list.
| Balancer bolt pattern | Pontiac used a six-bolt arrangement through 1967 and a four-bolt one from 1968. Aftermarket dampers from ATI and TCI use a three-bolt pattern, and a three-bolt crank pulley is a different part number from the four-bolt one. |
| Year split on offsets | Crank pulley groove offsets changed between the 1968-70 arrangement and 1971-and-later. Use the bracketry from the same era as the pulley you choose or nothing will line up. |
| A/C or not | A/C cars need an extra groove on the crank and usually on the water pump. Count the belts on the car before you order. |
| Water pump size | The 4" and 4-1/2" water pumps take different pulleys, and March's V-belt crank pulleys call for a 1969-or-newer 11 bolt 4-1/2" pump along with a 1968-or-newer balancer. |
| Accessories | The Engine Accessories section carries the alternators, Saginaw power steering pump, remote reservoir and hoses, Sanden A/C compressor and the 6-rib belts, so the drive and the things it drives can be ordered together. |
Write down your year, balancer bolt count, water pump diameter and which accessories the car has to keep. Those four answers narrow this whole category to a short list, and they are the four things Butler will ask you for on the phone.
