Buying Clearance — Air Cleaner/Carb Spacers for Pontiac V8s
An air cleaner spacer lifts the air cleaner off the carburetor flange. On a Pontiac V8 that is usually about clearance rather than airflow: a linkage, a choke, a fuel line or a tall float bowl needs room the base does not leave, and a quarter inch of spacer solves it.
Butler stocks RPC aluminum spacers with a 5.125 inch neck in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 1-1/4 inch heights, each with an o-ring seal on the bottom and a recessed step on top for the air cleaner flange to drop into.

1. How much lift do you actually need
These are all aluminum, all cut for a 5.125 inch neck, and all sealed the same way: an o-ring at the carburetor and a recessed lip on top so the air cleaner base sits into the spacer instead of on top of it. Pick by the height you are short.
| 1/4 inch | for a fitting or a linkage arm that is just touching. The smallest change that still solves a real problem. |
| 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch | the usual sizes for clearing a fuel line, a choke assembly or an electric choke cap. |
| 1 inch | enough to clear most tall float bowls and EFI fuel inlet fittings. |
| 1-1/4 inch | 1.5 inches tall overall. The most lift here, and the one least likely to fit under a stock hood. |
2. The shaker trap
This is the one to read twice. The taller spacers are not for use on cars equipped with shakers, because a shaker drop base only allows up to 7/8 inch. Stack a 1 inch or 1-1/4 inch spacer under a shaker assembly and the scoop no longer sits correctly to the hood.
3. Remember what you are giving away
Every inch of spacer is an inch of element height you can no longer run. If you add a 1 inch spacer to clear a fuel fitting, you may need to drop from a 4 inch element to a 3 inch, or from a 3 inch to a 2 inch, to keep the lid under the hood. Work the whole stack on paper first: carburetor flange to hood, minus spacer, minus base drop, and what is left is your element.
