Base, Element, Lid — Air Cleaners/Filters for Pontiac V8s
On a Pontiac the air cleaner is a fitment part as much as a filtration part. Base, element and lid stack up to a height that either clears your hood or does not, and the same assembly has to clear a shaker scoop, a Tri-Power setup or a hood brace. Get the stack wrong and the hood will not latch.

1. Stacking to the Height You Have
The assembly is three pieces and each changes overall height. Measure from the carb flange to the underside of the hood first, then build down to it.
| Bases | 14" round with a 5-1/8" carburetor flange, flat or dropped. The dropped bases come in 7/8" and 1-1/8" amounts in steel with chrome or black plating, and a 1" drop base plate is stocked for Holley Sniper throttle bodies. A drop base buys hood clearance. |
| Elements | 14" round in 2", 3" and 4" tall, reusable cotton in red or black, plus a 3" paper element. The taller the element, the higher the lid sits. |
| Lids | Steel muscle car style in chrome or black, cast aluminum plain and ball milled in polished or black, full finned tops, filtered element-style steel lids, and CNC milled billet lids with a Pontiac, GTO, Trans Am, Firebird or Butler Performance logo. |
| Build your own | Butler's build-your-own assembly lets you pick base, element and lid so the total height lands where you need it. Aluminum spacers with an O-ring and recessed lip from 1/4" to 1-1/4" go the other way. |
2. What Bolts to What
Three details decide whether the pieces you picked will go together.
| Neck size | Everything here is built around a 5-1/8" carburetor or EFI throttle body neck, covering 4150 style carbs and Sniper 4150 and 2300 throttle bodies. None of it fits a Dominator. |
| Edelbrock and Carter AFB | Those carburetors require the flat air cleaner base. A dropped base will not work on them. |
| Hardware | Steel covers come with a cut-to-fit stud and wingnut; cast covers come with a low profile tapered head screw, also cut to fit. Studs and 1/4-20 wingnuts are also stocked on their own. |
| Tri-Power | Billet Tri-Power EFI air cleaner kits come as sets of three with reusable filters, billet tops, FiTech pattern base plates and offset studs. |
3. Shaker Hoods and Breather Plumbing
Two special cases that come up constantly on Pontiacs.
| 2nd gen F-body shakers | Drop base shaker assemblies with a cone shaped washable element, in a 3" version for the 1973-79 326-455 Trans Am on an Edelbrock RPM intake and a 4" tall version for a Mega Scoop. Replacement cone elements are stocked in both heights. |
| Breather tube kit | Butler's Pontiac breather tube kit plumbs the air filter housing to an oil separator for aftermarket valve covers, and needs a 1.25" hole for the grommet. |
Measure hood clearance first, then pick the base, the element and the lid. If you are on a Sniper or a Tri-Power, say so when you order: the base is the part that changes.
