Wide Port Cylinder CNC Heads
Pontiac V8 Wide Port Cylinder CNC Heads
Past the Round Port Ceiling — Wide Port Cylinder CNC Heads for Pontiac V8s
Wide port heads are where Butler's round port program tops out. The intake and exhaust runners are completely CNC ported to 370+ CFM, which is past what a standard round port head will flow and past what a standard rocker and lifter will clear. This is a serious-performance head, not a bolt-on.
Butler builds them on Edelbrock round port castings in 72cc and 87cc chambers, in hydraulic roller and solid roller versions, assembled complete with Ferrea valves and springs matched to the application. Matching T&D shaft rocker assemblies for the wide port head are stocked alongside them.

More About Wide Port Cylinder CNC Heads
1. What the Wide Port Actually Is
Butler spent the development time on the flow bench and the dyno before this head went in the catalog, and the case for it is consistency as much as peak number.
| 370+ CFM, fully CNC | Intake and exhaust runners are completely CNC ported, which makes them far more consistent port to port and head to head than hand-ported high-flow castings. |
| Why CNC at this level | With the amount of material that has to come out to reach these numbers, Butler's own testing showed CNC porting produces a materially better head than removing it by hand. |
| Chamber choice | 72cc or 87cc, with 2.19"/1.77" valves, polished chambers and pushrod holes slotted for 1.65 rockers included in the price. |
2. The Valvetrain Is Not Optional
The wide port intake runner moves the pushrod, and that drives the rest of the parts list. Get this wrong and the heads will not run.
| Offset shaft rockers, always | Both versions require offset shaft rockers. The T&D 9028 assembly is built for the wide port Butler-ported Edelbrock head with a .700" offset intake, in any ratio. |
| Hydraulic roller version | Works with standard lifters. Offset lifters are not needed on the hydraulic roller wide port head. |
| Solid roller version | Requires offset solid roller lifters in addition to the offset shaft rockers. |
| Running a hyd roller cam | These heads can be used with hydraulic roller cams, but solid roller lifters are required to do it. |
3. Intake Clearance Is the Other Catch
A wide port head needs an intake with enough port height to actually be port matched to it. A standard Pontiac dual plane is not that intake.
| What works | Edelbrock 2957 or 29575, Butler Northwind NW4150 or NW4500, or a sheet metal manifold. |
| What that means for the car | Check hood and Shaker clearance before you order, because the manifold options here are taller than the street intakes you would run behind a standard round port head. |
| Package option | Butler also sells the wide port head as a top end package with the port-matched intake, T&D 1.65 rockers, lifters, ARP head studs, Cometic head gaskets and a pushrod length checking tool already in the box. |
If you are chasing the top of Butler's pump gas power range and you are already committed to shaft rockers and a tall manifold, the wide port is the head. If any of that is a surprise, the 325 or 340 CFM round port program is the more realistic stop.
