Pontiac V8 70-74 F-Body Firebird/TA
Early Second-Gen — 70-74 F-Body Firebird/TA for Pontiac V8s
The 1970-74 Firebird and Trans Am is the early second-generation F-body, and it sits in an awkward spot: the subframe changed from the 67-69 car, and the mounts changed again for 1975. Parts that fit a 69 Firebird or an 80 Trans Am are not the answer here, which is why this chassis gets its own page.
Butler carries the two-piece V8 frame mount set for 1970-74 F-bodies and Butler Performance solid engine mounts built specifically for this chassis, plus the adaptor hardware you need if the engine and the car are from different years.

More About 70-74 F-Body Firebird/TA
1. Why 1970-74 Is Its Own Part Number
Three things separate this chassis from the Firebirds on either side of it.
| Two-piece frame mount set | the 1970-74 F-body V8 frame mount set Butler carries is a two-piece set. The 1967-69 car uses a four-piece bracket set. If you are counting brackets on the bench, that is the tell. |
| Not interchangeable with 75-81 | Butler's 75-81 solid frame mounts note that to use them on a 1970-74 car you may need to drill mounting holes, and then use the Butler F10774 engine mount adaptor to tie a 1961-1979 engine to that frame mount. It can be made to work, but it is not a bolt-in. |
| Block generation matters | a 1969-and-earlier block has two engine mount holes. Butler's engine mount adaptor kits carry extra bolt holes specifically to adapt a 61-69 two-bolt block for use in a 70-81 F-body, which is the common case when an early 400 goes into one of these cars. |
2. Solid Mounts and What They Cost You
| Butler solid engine mounts, 70-74 Firebird | steel mount, no rubber and no poly biscuit. The engine cannot move, so nothing goes soft on a launch and the pulleys, fan and headers stay exactly where you set them. That is why it belongs in a drag or road race car. |
| What a solid mount does on the street | with no elastomer in the path, idle shake, firing pulses and exhaust drone all transmit into the subframe and the floor. A cruiser with a healthy cam gets tiring fast. If the car sees real street miles, a rubber or polyurethane mount is the better trade. |
| Aftermarket blocks | Butler notes IA2 blocks must be clearanced or notched higher to fit the solid mounts. |
Start by confirming you have the two-piece frame mount arrangement, then match the engine mount to the block's hole count. If the engine and chassis are from different generations, the Engine Adaptors section covers the plates that bridge them.
