72-74 X-Body

Pontiac V8 72-74 X-Body

The Shared Pattern — 72-74 X-Body for Pontiac V8s

The 1972-74 X-body is the Pontiac Ventura, and it is the odd one in the lineup: a compact that never got its own mount design. It shares its Pontiac V8 mount pattern with the 1967-69 Firebird, which is why the parts here carry both applications on the same listing.

Butler stocks the shared-family parts for this chassis: polyurethane and stainless interlocking engine mounts and Butler Performance solid engine mounts cataloged for 67-69 Firebird and 72-74 X-body together.

More About 72-74 X-Body

1. Why X-Body Parts Say Firebird On Them

If you are looking for a mount labeled Ventura you will not find one, and that is not a gap in the catalog.

One listing, several carsButler's mounts for this chassis are cataloged for 67-69 Firebird and 72-74 X-body together, along with Catalina 389 (1965-66) and 400 (1967-70) and Bonneville 389 (1965-66) and 400 (1968-70). A mount that lists the first-gen Firebird is the correct part for the X-body.
What that means for used partsmounts pulled from a 68 Firebird or a 67 Catalina are in the same family. Mounts from a 1970-74 or 1975-81 Firebird are not, even though those cars are closer in age.
Check the block, not just the cara 1969-and-earlier block has two engine mount holes rather than the later pattern. If the V8 going into the Ventura is from a different generation than the car, look at the Engine Adaptors section before ordering mounts.

2. Poly or Solid in a Light Car

Polyurethane and stainless interlockingrated good for 650+ horsepower, with the two halves interlocked so they cannot pull apart under load. The X-body is a light car and it does not take much power to move the engine around, so this is the sensible choice for anything driven on the street. If it has headers or Ram Air manifolds, ceramic coating is highly recommended plus a heat shield or header wrap, since heat can melt or deteriorate polyurethane.
Solid mountsa steel connection with no give. The engine stays put through a launch and none of the driveline movement soaks into rubber. The cost is that a light, thin-bodied compact with very little insulation passes every bit of that vibration and exhaust drone straight to the driver. Solid belongs in an X-body built to race, not one built to cruise. If the engine is an IA2 block, Butler's note is that it has to be clearanced and notched higher before a solid mount will sit.

Match the listing that names 67-69 Firebird and 72-74 X-body together, verify the block's mount hole pattern, and let the car's actual use pick poly or solid.
