Pontiac V8 Tremec Manual Transmission Kits by SST
Two Kits, One Chassis — Tremec Manual Transmission Kits by SST for Pontiac V8s
SST PerfectFit kits come in two versions for every chassis, and the difference is the whole point: a manual-to-TKX kit for a car that already has three pedals, and an auto-to-TKX kit that adds everything an automatic car is missing. The second is a much longer parts list, and SST includes it.
Butler carries PerfectFit Tremec TKX kits for A-body, F-body, X-body and B-body Pontiacs from 1958 through 1981, with shifter relocation machining included and a 500-600 torque capacity rating.

More About Tremec Manual Transmission Kits by SST
1. Find your car
SST builds these per chassis, and each chassis is offered in both a manual conversion and an automatic conversion version.
| A-body | 64-67 GTO, LeMans and Tempest; 68-72 GTO and LeMans; 73-77 GTO and LeMans. |
| F-body | 67-69 Firebird and Trans Am, and 70-81 Firebird and Trans Am. |
| X-body | 62-64, 65-67 and 68-74. |
| B-body | 58-64 and 65-70 full size cars. |
2. Manual to TKX, and what it gives you
If the car is already a stick, you keep the bellhousing, flywheel and clutch you have and the kit fills in the rest.
| The transmission | a Tremec TKX with 500-600 torque capacity in wide or close ratio, with ratios of 2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.00 and 0.68. SST notes a 0.81 fifth gear is available on special order if you add it to the order notes. |
| SST case customization | the case is CNC machined for a PerfectFit without compromising the transmission, and shifter relocation machining is included so the shifter lands in the factory position. |
| Shifter | a compact billet aluminum mechanism with short throws and true internal offset for correct factory shifter positioning. |
| Everything around it | pre-engineered front and rear floor insert sheet metal, a heavy duty pilot bearing with a lube seal, a rubber isolator mount with an optional heavy-duty poly version for track duty, a calibrated speedo cable or electronic connector, a reverse light connector, Pennzoil Synchromesh gear oil and ARP pressure plate bolts. |
| Crossmember | the manual conversion uses the existing crossmember, and SST notes slight movement may be necessary. |
3. Auto to TKX, the bigger job
Going from an automatic to a stick means the car has no clutch pedal, no bellhousing, no flywheel and no linkage. The auto-to-TKX kit covers all of it.
| Pedal kit | included, which is the piece most people underestimate. |
| Flywheel | billet or cast steel depending on your needs and budget. It has to match how your engine was balanced, so tell SST and the shop which it is. |
| Clutch kit | a high performance, long life package with easy pedal effort tailored to the build. |
| Bellhousing and inspection cover | a titanium-aluminum OE type bell, or a steel scattershield that meets race safety requirements. |
| Mechanical linkage and throwout bearing | included, along with the shifter handle and a five-speed ball. |
| Tunnel work | a tunnel template and ready-to-install sheet metal, plus shift boot and trim ring. |
4. Options and the fine print
| Carbon fiber synchro upgrade | optional carbon fiber lined synchronizer blocker rings for higher rpm shift capability. |
| Classic Fit | a lower cost option for non-console installations, where slight trimming of the shifter opening may be required. |
| Driveshaft | not included. SST supplies instructions to take dimensions after the transmission is in, then you have the shaft built. |
| Hydraulic clutch | if you would rather skip the Z-bar entirely, SST builds a hydraulic clutch actuator system for the TKX with chassis-specific part numbers. |
| Warranty | SST lists a full 12 month warranty with unlimited technical support and a 24 month installation window. |
Tell us the year, the body and whether the car is currently automatic or manual. That one answer changes the kit, the price and roughly half the work.
