A bare Tremec is the right buy when you already know what the rest of the driveline is going to be. No shifter relocation, no crossmember, no clutch kit, just the gearbox. Builders doing a one-off chassis, a pro-touring car or a second transmission for a car already converted usually want exactly this.

1. TKX or T56 Magnum
| Tremec TKX, five speed | 600 lb-ft of torque capacity, a 7,500 rpm shift capacity, 26 input splines and 31 output splines. Its three-piece aluminum case is compact and end-loaded, which Tremec states provides clearance in most transmission tunnels without floor modifications. Gear sets are a wide 3.27, 1.98, 1.34, 1.00, 0.72 and a close 2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.00 with either a 0.81 or a 0.68 overdrive. |
| Tremec T56 Magnum, six speed | 700 lb-ft of torque capacity and reasonably light at 135 lbs dry, with 4616 chromoly gears and shafts, a one-piece counter shaft and triple cone synchros. Close ratio is 2.66, 1.78, 1.30, 1.00, .80, .63 and wide ratio is 2.97, 2.10, 1.46, 1.00, .74, .50. |
| Tunnel work | the T56 Magnum requires tunnel modification. That is the practical difference between the two on an unmodified Pontiac body. |
2. Know what a bare transmission does not include
Everything a manual swap needs beyond the gearbox itself is a separate order.
| Shifter position | the bare TKX has its shifter in the generic location and is not compatible with most stock consoles. Butler can build a custom kit for your Pontiac if you need a shorter throw or the shifter moved. |
| Bellhousing, flywheel and clutch | a BOP bellhousing, a flywheel matched to your engine's balance, a 26-spline clutch and a pilot bearing. Butler flywheels must match the engine's balance, neutral or stock. |
| Release and linkage | mechanical Z-bar linkage or a hydraulic clutch actuator system built for the TKX or Magnum. |

3. One fitment warning
Tremec states that the T56 Magnum transmissions listed here will not work on 1998-2002 F-body cars or 2004-2006 GTOs. For a classic Pontiac chassis that is not an issue, but it matters if you were planning to move the gearbox into a late car later. Both boxes ship new in box with full factory warranty. If you would rather not assemble the supporting parts yourself, look at the American Powertrain and SST complete kits, which are built around these same transmissions for specific Pontiac chassis.
