Pontiac V8 400 Block
From 406 To 495 — 400 Block for Pontiac V8s
400 Block kits are the most-built combination Butler sells, and the one with the most stroke options. A 400 block will make anywhere from 406 cubic inches at stock stroke to 495 at 4.500", and the right kit depends as much on the casting number as on the stroke you want.
Butler covers it with re-ring and rebuild kits, balanced and build-your-own rotating assemblies, and short block kits and assembled short blocks in both budget 557-casting and full custom versions.

1. The 557 casting warning
Read this before you pick a stroke. Butler's own note on the 400 rotating assembly is specific: it is not recommended for blocks with casting numbers ending in 557, and those blocks should be limited to a 4.000" stroke and under 500 horsepower because of thinner main webbing.

2. Stroke and the displacement it makes

3. Rotating assemblies, balanced or build your own
| Balanced 406-413 assembly | New factory cast or forged crank at 3.750" stroke, forged flat top, dome or dish pistons, bushed full float H-beam 6.625" rods, aftermarket .980" wrist pins, pin fitted, Total Seal Classic Race rings, Federal Mogul or Clevite performance main and rod bearings, internally balanced by Butler. |

| Compression to order | Tell Butler the heads and the compression ratio you want and the techs work with Ross to design the piston to hit it. Custom dish pistons carry a 10 to 12 week lead time, so plan ahead. |
4. Re-ring and rebuild kits
| 400 Re-Ring Kit | Rings, rod bearings, main bearings and a complete gasket kit with rear main seal and oil pan gasket options, for a block with good bores. |
| 400 Rebuild Kit, cast hypereutectic pistons | Adds pistons, pins and rings for a standard rebuild. |

| Bore sizes | Butler lists 4.150" at .030" over, 4.160" at .040" over and 4.180" at .060" over across the 400 kits. |
5. What the block gets before it ships
Every Butler 400 short block is cleaned, magnafluxed, sonic tested and completely deburred, then bored and honed with a torque plate, line honed with ARP main studs, deck squared, and fitted with cam bearings and brass freeze plugs. Assembled versions come on a reusable engine cradle and include a Viton rear main seal. Unassembled kits arrive ready for you or your shop to finish.
