Pontiac V8 455 Block
462 To 501 Cubic Inches — 455 Block for Pontiac V8s
455 Block kits work with the largest factory Pontiac bore and the biggest main journals, which is why a 455 gets to 500 cubic inches on a stroker crank without leaving the production casting. It also means the ring pack and the bore range here are unique to this block.
Butler covers the 455 with re-ring and rebuild kits in cast or forged pistons, custom short block kits and assembled short blocks from 462 to 501 cubic inches, plus Sealed Power and Total Seal ring sets for the full bore range.

1. Re-ring and rebuild kits

2. The compression numbers on a 455
Chamber size drives everything on this block, and Butler publishes the estimates so you can match them to the heads you own.
| Forged flat top, -6cc | Around 11.93:1 with a 72cc chamber, 10.32:1 at 87cc and 9.56:1 at 96cc. Only the large chambers land in pump gas territory with a flat top. |
| Forged dish, -18cc | Around 10.61:1 at 72cc, 9.34:1 at 87cc and 8.73:1 at 96cc. This is the answer when the heads have small chambers or aluminum is not in the budget. |
| General guidance | Butler recommends no more than 9.5:1 on cast iron heads and no more than 10.5:1 on aluminum heads for pump gas. Pick the dish that gets you there. |
3. Short block kits by stroke
| 4.210" stroke | 462 to 469 cubic inches, cast or forged crank, 6.625" I-beam rods press fit, bushed H-beam optional. |
| 4.250" stroke | 467 to 474 cubic inches, on 6.800" rods. |
| 4.500" stroke | 494 to 501 cubic inches on a forged crank and H-beam rods. Butler recommends four-bolt billet main caps at this stroke. |
| Pistons | Ross Racing pistons in a 4.181" to 4.211" bore range, flat top standard, dish or dome available at additional cost. |
| Assembled or kit | Both versions carry the same prepped block and internally balanced rotating assembly. Assembled short blocks are built by a Butler engine specialist and ship on a reusable engine cradle with a Viton rear main seal. |
4. Rings for the 455 bore range
| Sealed Power replacement | Standard 4.150", .030" over at 4.180", .040" over at 4.190" and .060" over at 4.210". Note the 455 pack is a 5/64" top, a 1/16" second and a 3/16" oil ring, which is not the same as the 400 and 428 pack. |
| Total Seal Classic Race | Drop in at 4.181" and 4.191", and file fit covering 4.180" to 4.181", 4.185", 4.190" to 4.191" and 4.216". |

The block is cleaned, magnafluxed, sonic tested, deburred, bored and honed with a torque plate, line honed with ARP main studs, deck squared and fitted with cam bearings and brass freeze plugs before anything goes in it. Bring Butler your measured bore and chamber volume and the rest of the kit follows from there.
