Pontiac V8 428 Block
Big Chambers, Big Stroke — 428 Block for Pontiac V8s
428 Block kits start from a different baseline than a 400. The 428 already came with a 4.000" stroke crank and large chambers, so the stock-stroke compression problem most Pontiacs have does not exist here, and the stroker steps start at 4.210" instead.
Butler covers the 428 with re-ring kits, rebuild kits in cast hypereutectic or forged pistons with published compression ratios, and custom short block kits and assembled short blocks at 4.210", 4.250" and 4.500" stroke.

More About 428 Block
1. Re-ring and rebuild kits
| 428 Re-Ring Kit | Rings in standard bore, .030, .040 or .060 over, Federal Mogul main and rod bearings in standard, .010" or .020" sizes, and a complete gasket kit with rear main seal and oil pan gasket options. |
| 428 Rebuild Kit, cast hypereutectic pistons | Adds pistons, pins and rings. Butler lists the -6cc flat top at an estimated 8.9 to 9.0:1 with 96cc heads, which is squarely a pump gas number. |
| 428 Rebuild Kit, forged pistons | Flat or dish tops in the same overbore sizes. The -6cc flat top runs 8.9 to 9.0:1 with 96cc heads and the -14cc dish runs 8.9 to 9.1:1 with 87cc heads, so you can hold compression while changing chamber size. |
| Either kit | Both are available with the option to add a new cast or forged crank. |
2. Short block kits by stroke
Butler builds the 428 short block assembled or unassembled, and the stroke sets the displacement.
| 4.210" stroke | 455 to 462 cubic inches on a cast or forged crank. |
| 4.250" stroke | 455 to 462 cubic inches, on 6.800" I-beam rods, press fit, with bushed H-beam rods available. |
| 4.500" stroke | 487 to 495 cubic inches on H-beam rods. Butler recommends four-bolt billet main caps at this stroke. |
| Pistons | Ross Racing pistons in a 4.155" to 4.181" bore range, flat top standard, dish or dome available. |
3. What comes with a Butler 428 short block
The block is cleaned, magnafluxed, sonic tested, completely deburred, bored and honed with a torque plate, line honed with ARP main studs, deck squared, and fitted with cam bearings and brass freeze plugs. The rotating assembly is internally balanced, with file fit rings and performance rod and main bearings. Kits ship ready to assemble; assembled short blocks are built by a Butler engine specialist. You can also send Butler your own block rather than buying one.
