Pontiac V8 Fuel Pumps- In-Tank Carbureted
Quiet and Submerged — Fuel Pumps- In-Tank Carbureted for Pontiac V8s
An in-tank carbureted fuel pump puts the pump inside the tank, submerged in fuel, while still delivering the low pressure a carburetor wants. You get the quiet running and hot-fuel handling of a modern in-tank system on a Pontiac V8 that is staying carbureted, without a fuel cell or a welded sump.
Butler stocks the Aeromotive Phantom returnless carbureted kit, Holley and Sniper retrofit drop-in modules with built-in carb-pressure regulators, a Butler complete tank and in-tank pump solution for carbureted use, and the relays those pumps need.

More About Fuel Pumps- In-Tank Carbureted
1. Why put a carb pump in the tank
Carburetors have been fed by mechanical and frame-rail pumps forever, so this is an upgrade rather than a repair part.
| Noise and life | Butler's notes point out that in-tank pumps are much quieter than external pumps and generally last longer. |
| Vapor lock | A pump sitting in fuel avoids the hot fuel handling trouble an external pump has. Aeromotive cites eliminating vapor lock as the reason for their returnless layout. |
| An EFI path later | The Holley and Sniper modules convert a factory tank or cell with basic tools and no welding, and upgrade to EFI later by changing the internal regulator. |
2. What Butler stocks
Three approaches, separated mostly by how much tank work you want to do yourself.
| Aeromotive Phantom carbureted | Returnless, preset to 15 psi, using their Stealth 325 pump at 95 gph / 360 lph and listed as supporting 900 hp naturally aspirated or 750 hp forced induction on gasoline. Includes a billet top hat with ORB-06 ports, foam baffle and bladder sump, high-flow pre-pump filter and billet C-ring mount, adjustable from 6 to 11 inches. |
| Holley 255 lph diecast module | A returnless drop-in retrofit with a built-in regulator for carb pressure, supporting up to 700 carb hp at 6 psi. Installs in tanks 6.5" to 12" deep, sits 1.275" above the mounting surface, clamps beside the existing sender and rotates 360 degrees, with 1/4" NPT ports. |
| Sniper 340 lph retrofit | Same clamping approach, 340 lph and E85 compatible, up to 900 carb hp at 8 psi, for tanks 7" to 12" deep. |
| Butler complete solution | A factory replacement tank with the in-tank fuel system already in it, converting an EFI-ready tank for carbureted use, including a stub neck and 2" ID connector hose. |
3. What you need with it
These are self-contained kits, but the electrical side is on you.
| Relay and wire gauge | Sniper recommends a 30 amp fuel pump relay and a minimum of 12 gauge wire. Butler stocks the Holley relay and the MSD relay and wiring kit. |
| Pressure control | The Holley and Sniper modules carry their own internal regulator. Run a high-pressure EFI pump on a carburetor instead and you need a bypass regulator set for carb pressure. |
| Tank depth | Measure before ordering. Each module has a stated minimum and maximum depth, and that decides the choice more often than horsepower does. |
If the tank is already out for a sender or a rusty original, this is the cheapest time to move the pump inside it. A carbureted Pontiac gains quiet running and a better shot at a hot traffic jam.
