Pontiac V8 Rocker Arms- Full Roller Rockers
Ratio, Material, Clearance — Rocker Arms- Full Roller Rockers for Pontiac V8s
Full roller rockers put a needle-bearing fulcrum and a roller tip between the pushrod and the valve, cutting the friction and the valve-tip scrub that a stock stamped rocker lives with. On a Pontiac V8 running a performance cam and stiff springs, that is the difference between a valvetrain that settles down and one that wears its guides out.
Butler carries Butler Exclusive Tru-Ratio Endurance Series rockers built by Scorpion in 1.5, 1.6 and 1.65, Butler Stainless Pro Series 17-4ph stainless in 1.52 and 1.65, Comp Cams Ultra-Gold ARC aluminum, Crower Enduro stainless, PRW Elite stainless and Pro Series billet aluminum, and Scorpion Endurance sets.

More About Rocker Arms- Full Roller Rockers
1. Picking A Ratio
Ratio multiplies cam lobe lift at the valve. More ratio is more lift and more duration at the valve from the same cam, and more load on everything downstream.
| 1.5 and 1.52 | the conservative choice and the closest thing to what the factory ran. Butler stocks 1.5 in the Tru-Ratio Endurance Series, Comp Ultra-Gold and Crower Enduro, and 1.52 in the Butler Stainless Pro Series and PRW Elite stainless. |
| 1.6 | the middle step, available in the Tru-Ratio Endurance Series and the Crower Enduro line. Useful when you want more valve lift without re-cutting spring pockets for the coil bind a bigger cam would need. |
| 1.65 | the most common performance ratio on a Pontiac V8, offered across the Tru-Ratio Endurance Series, Butler Stainless Pro Series, Comp Ultra-Gold, Crower Enduro, PRW Elite and PRW Pro Series billet aluminum. |
| True ratio matters | the Butler Exclusive Tru-Ratio Endurance Series is built to deliver the ratio stamped on the arm. A rocker that reads 1.65 and delivers less is a cam you paid for and did not get. |
2. Stainless Or Aluminum
Both materials are here for a reason, and the choice usually comes down to how the engine is used rather than how much power it makes.
| 17-4ph stainless | Butler Stainless Pro Series arms are 17-4ph stainless with CNC machined pushrod cups, heat-treated Cr40 roller tips and shafts, full-cage needle bearings and oversized trunnions, carrying a lifetime guarantee against breakage on the rocker body. Crower Enduro arms are 17-4PH stainless with 1025 heat-treating, oversized needle bearings and alloy steel tip rollers, made in the USA. |
| Aluminum | Comp Cams Ultra-Gold ARC arms are CNC-machined aluminum with a spring oiler channel through the body, spiral-lock trunnion clips and a lifetime warranty, rated for use with up to 700 lbs of open spring pressure. The Tru-Ratio Endurance Series uses 7000 series aerospace-grade aluminum bodies and handles .750" lift and 750 lbs of max open spring pressure. |
| Weight and profile | Tru-Ratio Endurance Series arms average 28 grams lighter than the Race Series arms and sit lower, with shorter poly locks, for better fitment under most stock valve covers. |
3. Spring Clearance Is A Fitment Spec
A big dual spring and a rocker body occupy the same airspace. Check this before you order, not after the heads are on.
| Published clearance | Crower Enduro arms clear 1.560" diameter springs. Comp Ultra-Gold ARC arms clear up to 1.650" OD springs. Butler Stainless Pro Series arms are designed to clear large diameter springs. |
| Open pressure limit | the Tru-Ratio Endurance Series is rated to 750 lbs max open spring pressure and .750" lift; Comp Ultra-Gold is rated to 700 lbs open. If your spring package exceeds the rocker's rating, you are shopping for the wrong rocker or the wrong spring. |
| Valve cover clearance | tall rockers and stock stamped covers do not always coexist. The lower-profile Endurance Series arms and their shorter poly locks exist specifically to help here. |
4. Fitment Notes Worth Reading Twice
| Stud size | these are 7/16 stud-mount rockers. Butler Stainless Pro Series arms are listed for Pontiac 287-455 and 4.3L V8, 1958-81, on 7/16 studs; Comp Ultra-Gold is listed for Pontiac V8 265-455 with 7/16 studs. A head still wearing smaller factory studs needs a stud conversion first. |
| Guide plates required | the Butler Stainless Pro Series sets call for guide plates. Stud-mounted roller rockers rely on the guide plate to keep the pushrod on the cup. |
| Edelbrock round port | the Tru-Ratio Endurance Series is not recommended for Edelbrock round port heads, and some slight slotting of the pushrod hole toward the intake side may be required. |
| Locks in the box | Tru-Ratio Endurance and Scorpion Endurance sets include poly locks, Crower Enduro sets include sure-locks, and Butler Stainless Pro Series sets include RockerLocs. |
5. What Else Changes When You Fit Them
A rocker swap is rarely a bolt-on by itself.
| Pushrod length | changing ratio or rocker body moves the contact pattern on the valve tip. Check length with an adjustable checker and order the pushrods to the number you measure. |
| Retainer-to-seal and coil bind | more ratio means more lift, so re-check coil bind and retainer-to-seal clearance against the spring you are running. |
| Studs and guide plates | plan on 7/16 studs, matching guide plates and the correct poly locks as one package rather than three separate afterthoughts. |
Tell us the cam, the springs and the cylinder head you are running and we will point you at the ratio and body style that clears everything, instead of selling you a rocker that has to come back off.
