Pontiac V8 1975-81 F-Body, Trans Am/Firebird
The Late Second-Gen Car Is Different — 1975-81 F-Body, Trans Am/Firebird for Pontiac V8s
The 1975-81 Trans Am and Firebird uses its own exhaust part family. The late second-gen floor, rear valance and bumper are different enough from a 1970-74 car that the earlier systems will not route correctly, so Pypes builds a separate group of part numbers for these years.
Butler carries Pypes Performance Exhaust crossmember-back systems for 75-81 F-body cars in 2.5" mandrel-bent tubing, in both standard and crossflow muffler layouts, with your choice of an H-pipe or an X-pipe crossover.

More About 1975-81 F-Body, Trans Am/Firebird
1. Two layouts, one pipe size
Everything in this group is 2.5" mandrel-bent tubing with a bolt-on installation. The real choice is how the mufflers sit under the car.
| Standard crossmember-back | conventional dual mufflers, one per side, in both H-pipe and X-pipe versions. This is the straightforward route and the easiest to service later. |
| Crossflow muffler | a transverse muffler layout also offered in H-pipe and X-pipe versions. This is the layout to pick when ground clearance under a lowered car matters, or when you want to keep the underside looking stock. |
| F-body and X-body | the crossflow systems are listed for 1975-81 F/X-body, so a late X-body car is covered by the same parts. |
2. H-pipe or X-pipe
| H-pipe | the deeper, more traditional muscle car note. Pypes builds both the standard and the crossflow 75-81 systems this way. |
| X-pipe | a smoother, higher-pitched note and the more modern sound. Same coverage, both layouts. |
| Muffler options | the standard 75-81 systems are offered muffler-delete and with the Race Pro, Street Pro or Violator mufflers, so you can set the volume separately from the pipe routing. |
3. Do not order an earlier system
Pypes is explicit about this in its own product copy. The 1967-74 crossflow and rear exit systems call out the 75-81 part numbers as the correct substitution for these years, and vice versa. If you have a 1976 Trans Am and buy a 1970-74 system because the picture looks right, it will not hang where it needs to. Confirm the year before you order, and if you are running headers rather than factory manifolds, confirm the collector size so the downpipe connection is sorted the first time. Call the shop if you are unsure which layout suits your car.
