Pontiac V8 Oil System Components
Between the Block and the Filter — Oil System Components for Pontiac V8s
Oil system components cover everything between the block and the filter: the filter housing itself, adapters that get the filter out of the way of a header, remote filter plumbing, and the small parts that control where oil goes inside the engine. On a Pontiac V8 the factory housing carries the bypass, so it is not a part to leave out of a rebuild.
Butler stocks reproduction and reconditioned oil filter housings, the Butler billet bolt-on remote filter bypass plate and complete kit, Moroso remote brackets and filters, Butler oil restrictors and magnetic drain plugs.

More About Oil System Components
1. Filter Housings: Angled or 90 Degree
The Pontiac oil filter housing is not just a mounting boss. It carries the oil filter bypass, and the angle it is cast at decides whether your exhaust fits.
| Angled reproduction housing | A diecast reproduction of the GM angled 120 degree housing for all 1964-78 Pontiac V8 except the 301. It includes the oil filter bypass with the correct opening rate, which Butler calls a must for any rebuild — the bypass keeps a restricted or failed filter from starving the engine. It uses a steel threaded insert so the filter threads do not wear or strip. Gasket is not included. |
| 90 degree housing | Butler reconditions the stock 90 degree housing — disassembled, heat cleaned, blasted and painted, with all internals checked or replaced, and it retains the factory oil pressure bypass. Gasket included. |
| Which one | 1967-69 Firebirds running Long Branch or Ram Air manifolds must use the 90 degree oil filter housing. If that is your car, order the housing before you order the adapter. |
2. Getting the Filter Out of the Way
Long branch factory headers and the stock filter want the same space. An adapter re-clocks the filter so the two can coexist.
| What the adapter does | It bolts between the housing and the filter and rotates the filter to clear the header. Firebird, Grand Prix and X-body Ventura long branch applications are the usual candidates, and full-size cars have their own version that keeps the original look. Every one of these requires the 90 degree oil filter housing. |
| Check availability | Adapter stock moves. Call Butler with your body, year and exhaust before you plan the build around one. |
3. Going Remote
A remote filter buys you header clearance, a bigger filter and an easier oil change, at the cost of plumbing you have to do properly.
| Butler billet bypass plate | A bolt-on bypass adapter for a remote mounted filter with 1/2 NPT inlet and outlet, gasket and instruction sheets included. Butler's minimum recommended hose size is -10AN, which is 5/8" ID. Undersize the hose and you undo the point of the exercise. |
| Complete kit | Butler's remote filter bypass kit gathers the whole system: the Pontiac bolt-on bypass adapter with gasket in cast or billet, a Moroso filter relocation mount with 13/16-16 thread, four adapter fittings, four -10AN hose ends in straight, 45 or 90 degree, your choice of hose length to cut into inlet and outlet, and a Moroso high capacity filter with relief valve and anti-drainback valve. |
| Moroso brackets | A cast aluminum single filter mount that takes a Chevy V8 style spin-on and can be tapped for 1/2" NPT, plus billet -12AN mounts in in-line and front-line port arrangements so you can route hose the way the car allows. |
| Remote filters | Moroso's tall two-quart style filter, 13/16-16 thread, 8" high, 350 psi, 27 micron. It is for remote oil filter housings only and is not for a stock Pontiac filter housing. |
4. Restrictors and Small Parts
The cheapest parts in the category and two of the easiest ways to protect a fresh engine.
| Oil restrictors | Butler's restrictors are 1/4"-20 thread with a .045 hole, sold in sets of 16. They are used to control oil going up top so more of it stays where the bearings need it — an engine builder decision, not a bolt-on upgrade, so talk it through with your machinist. |
| Magnetic drain plug | A 1/2"-20 magnetic plug with a copper washer, which Canton rates well above the standard plastic washer. It collects steel particles and lets you read the engine at every oil change. |
On a stock rebuild, the reproduction housing with a working bypass and a magnetic plug is the whole shopping list. On a header car or a race engine, start from the exhaust and work backwards to decide between a 90 degree housing, an adapter, or a remote setup.
