Pontiac V8 Bellhousings
The Adapter That Makes the Swap — Bellhousings for Pontiac V8s
The bellhousing is what makes a manual transmission swap possible on a Pontiac. Pontiac shares the BOP bolt pattern with Buick and Oldsmobile, not with Chevrolet, so the bell is the adapter between a Pontiac block and whatever gearbox you have decided to run behind it.
Butler carries the American Powertrain OE-style aluminum BOP bell, an SST heavy cast Pontiac bellhousing with inspection cover, Lakewood blow-proof SFI approved housings, and QuickTime SFI steel bells for Pontiac to TKO600 or Muncie and Pontiac to T56 or Magnum.

More About Bellhousings
1. Which bell for which transmission
Start from the gearbox, work back to the block.
| Factory-style manual boxes | the American Powertrain BOP bell is built to factory specification and is listed as compatible with any Muncie, Super T10, GM TKO, GM LGT700 or GM Richmond, along with all factory BOP flywheels and mechanical linkage. |
| TKO600 or Muncie with a safety bell | QuickTime builds an SFI bellhousing for Pontiac to TKO600 and Muncie applications. |
| T56 or GM Magnum | QuickTime also builds a Pontiac to LS T56 and GM Magnum SFI bell, which is the bell a Tremec Magnum six-speed swap needs. |
| Automatic overdrive swaps | some late automatic kits also require a specific adapter bellhousing to get from a BOP block to the transmission. Check the transmission kit listing. |
2. Aluminum, cast iron or steel scattershield
| Aluminum | the American Powertrain BOP bell is cast from thick-wall high titanium content aluminum alloy for torque crack resistance, CNC machined for parallelism and pre-checked for concentricity. It also has dual starter pockets, which solves a common swap headache. Installation hardware is included. |
| Heavy cast | SST's Pontiac bellhousing is made in the USA and is a heavier casting than the originals, and it includes the inspection cover. |
| SFI steel | Lakewood blow-proof and QuickTime housings are the answer where a sanctioning body requires a certified bell. QuickTime builds from high grade steel that work hardens to over 80,000 PSI. |
3. What else the bell needs
| Inspection cover | the American Powertrain bell can take a factory spec stamped steel inspection cover or your original BOP cover. The cover is a separate part number on that bell. |
| Clutch fork pivot stud | a bellhousing-mounted pivot stud is a separate piece, and Butler stocks the 1967-81 Pontiac bellhousing pivot stud in the transmission components section. |
| Dowel pins | extra-long bellhousing dowel pins, including an offset pair, are available for getting alignment right on a swap. |
Order the bell, the flywheel, the clutch and the linkage together. Tell us the transmission and whether you are running mechanical linkage or a hydraulic clutch, and we will make sure the bell you get accepts the setup you are building.
