Pontiac V8 Flexplate/Flywheel Bolts
Behind the Crank — Flexplate/Flywheel Bolts for Pontiac V8s
Flexplate and flywheel bolts tie the rotating assembly to the transmission side of the engine, and they are torqued into the back of the crank where nobody looks again for years. Length is critical: the bolt has to fill the crank flange thread without bottoming, and the head has to clear the flexplate or flywheel it is holding.
Butler stocks ARP Pontiac flexplate and flywheel bolts, a Butler 200,000 psi SCM-4140 flexplate bolt set, and Mr Gasket Grade 8 flywheel bolts with a reduced-profile head for tight clearance.

More About Flexplate/Flywheel Bolts
1. Automatic or Manual, and How Long
All of these are 1/2-20 into the Pontiac crank flange. What separates them is underhead length and the size of the head.
| ARP flexplate bolts | ARP-200-2904 is the Pontiac flex plate bolt set, 1/2-20 thread with 1.000" underhead length and 9/16" wrenching. |
| ARP flywheel bolts | ARP-290-2802 is a 1/2-20 bolt with .8750" underhead length and 3/4" wrenching for a manual transmission flywheel. |
| Butler flexplate set | BPI-Bolt-FLXPLT is 1/2"-20 x .697" underhead length with 11/16" wrenching, set of six, made from SCM-4140 alloy steel, cold formed with rolled threads and heat treated, rated at 200,000 psi — built to be stronger than the OEM bolt. |
| Mr Gasket flywheel bolts | MRG-914 is a 1/2-20 x 1" set heat treated to Grade 8 specs, with a reduced-profile hex head for extra clearance and a black plated finish. |
2. Getting the Install Right
This joint gets one shot. Once the transmission is in, nobody is re-checking it.
| Torque | Butler's Pontiac chart lists flexplate and flywheel bolts at 95 ft-lbs with thread locker. If you are running ARP hardware, use ARP's specification instead. |
| Check head clearance | a reduced-profile head exists because some flexplates, flywheels and starter setups do not leave room for a standard hex. Test fit before you commit. |
| Do not reuse questionable bolts | these are stretched every time they are torqued, and a flexplate bolt backing out takes the flexplate with it. |
| Converter side is separate | torque converter bolts are their own part number and live in the Kits, Sets & Misc Fasteners section. |
Match the bolt to what is actually bolted to the crank — flexplate thickness, flywheel thickness and any spacer all change the length you need. When in doubt, measure the stack before ordering.
