Pontiac V8 Intake Bolt Kits

Even and Correct — Intake Bolt Kits for Pontiac V8s

Intake manifold bolts on a Pontiac V8 pull the manifold down against two head flanges at an angle, so the clamping load has to be even and it has to be correct for the head material. Aluminum heads take considerably less torque than cast iron, and a manifold pulled down hard on aluminum is how ports get distorted and gaskets get pushed out.

Butler stocks ARP intake manifold bolt kits in stainless and black oxide, hex and 12-point, a Butler 1965-79 stainless intake fastener kit, and a 1971-72 stud and washer kit for 455 HO applications.

2. Torque by Head Material

This is the fitment question that actually matters on an intake.

Cast iron headsButler's Pontiac chart lists the intake manifold at 40 ft-lbs with non-hardening sealer.
Aluminum heads25 ft-lbs with non-hardening sealer — a large reduction, and one that gets missed on Edelbrock and KRE head swaps.
Sealer, not thread lockerthe intake bolt holes on a Pontiac break into the lifter valley, so non-hardening sealer on the threads is keeping oil in as much as it is sealing the bolt.
Work from the middle outpull the manifold down in stages across the pattern rather than tightening one side at a time.

3. Before You Set the Manifold

Chase the threadsintake bolt holes collect old sealer and rust. Clean threads are what make 40 ft-lbs mean 40 ft-lbs.
Watch the front boltthe single bolt that ties the timing cover to the intake is its own fastener with its own sealing method — it uses a rubber o-ring, not a paper gasket, and a much lower torque figure.
Carb studs are separatethe studs that hold the carburetor or throttle body to the manifold are in the Carb/EFI Bolt Kits section.

If the engine is changing from iron to aluminum heads, re-read the torque figure before the wrench comes out. Everything else about the job looks the same and the number is not.
