Pontiac V8 Transmission Components
The Parts That Finish the Job — Transmission Components for Pontiac V8s
Transmission components is where a swap actually gets finished. The gearbox is the easy part to buy; it is the clutch linkage, the mount, the dowel pins and the right fluid that keep a car on the lift for an extra weekend. Most of this shelf is factory-correct Pontiac clutch linkage nobody else stocks.
Butler carries Z-bars, clutch forks, pivot studs, springs, push rods and boots for 1964-77 Pontiacs, plus Butler polyurethane and rubber transmission mounts, extra-long bellhousing dowel pins, pilot bearings and Driven transmission fluids.

More About Transmission Components
1. Clutch linkage, by year and by body
Pontiac mechanical clutch linkage is specific in a way that catches people out. The Z-bar, the fork and the pivot studs all have to agree with the car.
| Z-bars | the 1964-66 A-body Z-bar comes with the hole for the return spring and has no inside lip for an inner seat. The 1968-72 A-body Z-bar is a different piece with a solid cross-shaft. |
| Pivot studs, block side | different studs for 64-67 and 73-77 A-body and 71-74 X-body, for 67-69 F-body, and for 70-81 F-body. These are not interchangeable. |
| Pivot studs, frame and bell side | a 1964-77 GM ball stud for the Z-bar to frame bracket, and a separate 1967-81 pivot stud for the bellhousing. |
| Springs | a one-piece clutch spring for 1964-65 and a two-piece spring for 1966-67. |
| Boot and push rod | a 1964-1977 one-piece clutch fork boot, and a clutch fork push rod that ranges in length from 6" to 8 1/4". |
2. Clutch forks are not all the same, and it matters
Butler stocks two reproduction 64-77 Pontiac V8 clutch forks and they behave differently. This is the kind of detail that only shows up after the transmission is already in the car.
| The OEM-style fork | reproduced with the correct offset and center push rod pocket, with the correct hooks for the 64-65 return spring and an anti-rattle spring hole for 66 and up. This is the drop-in choice. |
| The alternate fork | the 1964-65 one-piece return spring will not work with it. You have to use the two-piece 66-67 spring and attach it to the Z-bar rather than the exhaust flange, and the anti-rattle spring hole has to be drilled. It is not visually the same as original but it works well. |
| Which to order | if the car is being restored, take the OEM-style fork. If it is a driver and the alternate is what is available, know what you are signing up for before it arrives. |
3. Mounts and dowel pins
| Butler polyurethane transmission mount | supplied with a backer plate, bolts, lock washers and metal washers, and fits most manual and automatic GM transmissions. Poly transmits more noise and less movement than rubber, which is what you want behind a high-torque engine. |
| Butler rubber transmission mount | the quieter option, and the correct feel for a stock rebuild or a cruiser. |
| Extra-long bellhousing dowel pins | available including a .625" diameter pair with a .021" offset, for correcting bellhousing alignment on a swap. |
4. Pilot bearings and fluid
| Standard pilot bearing | the Pontiac pilot bearing at 1.3780" OD by 0.5906" ID, open on both sides. |
| Mid-plate pilot bearing | a stepped bearing at 1.710" OD with a 1.640" step-down, which installs in the torque converter hub hole. This is the one for a mid-plate setup. |
| Manual transmission fluid | Driven STF synthetic synchromesh, which is used in the Tremec T56 and TKO transmissions and is formulated to be compatible with the yellow metals found in manual gearboxes. |
| Automatic fluid | Driven AT3 synthetic racing ATF, formulated for high performance and racing applications only. Driven notes it is not an API type service oil, so it is not the fluid for a stock rebuild that sees daily use. |
When you order a transmission or a clutch, order the linkage for your specific year and body at the same time. We keep this shelf stocked because these are exactly the parts that hold up an otherwise finished job.
