Pontiac V8 Fuel Pumps- In-Tank EFI

Inside the Tank — Fuel Pumps- In-Tank EFI for Pontiac V8s

An in-tank EFI fuel pump is the pump a fuel injected Pontiac V8 wants: submerged in fuel for cooling and quiet, baffled so it does not starve under acceleration or cornering, and capable of the high pressure EFI needs. It is also the part that turns a factory tank into something an EFI conversion can actually live with.

Butler stocks Aeromotive Phantom retrofit kits, Holley OEM-style direct bolt-in modules by chassis and year, Holley and Sniper retrofit drop-in systems including Hydramat versions, and the Tanks Inc PA and GPA series Walbro-equipped modules Butler sells under its own name.

More About Fuel Pumps- In-Tank EFI

1. Direct bolt-in, or retrofit into the tank you have

The first fork in the road is whether there is a module already made for your chassis or whether you are converting a tank yourself.

OEM style, direct bolt inHolley builds 255 LPH in-tank modules as direct bolt-ins for 1961-64 big car, 1964-67 and 1968-72 A-body GTO and LeMans, 1967-69 and 1970-73 Firebird, and 1974-81 Firebird and Trans Am. Each is rated to support EFI engines producing up to 550 horsepower and includes a pre-calibrated fuel level sending unit designed to work with that application's factory gauge.
Universal retrofitThe Holley and Sniper retrofit modules convert a factory tank or fuel cell with basic tools and no welding or fabrication, clamping in beside the existing sending unit and rotating 360 degrees so you can clock the plumbing and wiring.
Cut-to-fit modulesThe Aeromotive Phantom and the Tanks Inc PA series are cut to height for the tank they go in, which is what makes them work in tanks that were never designed for an internal pump.

2. Sizing the pump

Every one of these is rated, and the ratings are the most useful numbers in the category. Match them to the power you are actually making, not the number on the valve cover.

Aeromotive Phantom 200A 200 lph pump supporting up to 450 hp EFI forced induction, 600 hp EFI naturally aspirated, 600 hp carbureted forced induction or 750 hp carbureted N/A.
Aeromotive Phantom 340A 340 lph pump supporting up to 700 hp EFI forced induction, 850 hp EFI N/A, 850 hp carbureted forced induction or 1000 hp carbureted N/A.
Butler PA seriesPA-2 at 190 lph for up to 450 hp EFI, PA-4 at 250 lph for up to 630 hp EFI, and PA-6 at 400 lph for 500 to 1000 hp EFI, with flow published at 40, 50 and 60 psi and all rates at 13.5 volts.
Holley Hydramat systemsThe 255 lph version supports up to 550 EFI or 700 carb hp at 60 psi; the larger version supports up to 875 EFI or 1100 carb hp, with a correspondingly higher amp draw.
Sniper 340 lphDiecast in-tank retrofit pumps offered in returnless and with-return versions.

3. Tank depth and baffling

These two specs kill more orders than horsepower ever does. Measure the tank before you choose a module.

Depth limitsThe Butler PA series needs a minimum tank depth of 6 inches and a maximum of 10.5 inches without modification. The Holley and Sniper retrofits fit tanks from 6.5" to 12" deep. The Aeromotive Phantom fits tanks from roughly 5.5" to 11" deep.
Baffling is not optionalThe PA series includes a reservoir tray to eliminate the pump starvation common in non-baffled tanks. Tanks Inc states flatly that the tray is an absolute necessity for fuel injection to prevent starvation when accelerating and cornering.
HydramatThe Holley retrofit systems with Hydramat add a mat-style pickup with multiple clocking positions to clear sending unit floats and tank floor restrictions.
Tanks Inc and Sniper tanks onlyThe GPA series module is built for Tanks Inc and Sniper tanks that already have a factory-installed reservoir tray, not for converting a plain tank. Some very shallow tanks will not accept the larger GPA pumps.

4. Plumbing, venting and wiring

The module is one piece of a system. These are the parts that go with it.

PortsThe GPA and PA modules use a heavy 10 gauge no-warp mounting plate with 1/4" NPT supply and return and use genuine Walbro pumps. The Holley retrofits use 1/4" NPT ports.
Vent itWhen converting a tank to fuel injection it is essential that the tank be properly vented. Butler stocks a rollover vent valve that threads directly into the PA pump assembly's 1/4" NPT top plate fitting.
Running one on a carburetorTo use a PA series pump in a carbureted system you must use a fuel pressure regulator, and Butler specifies the Edelbrock adjustable bypass regulator for it.
Return styleThe Aeromotive Phantom EFI kits must be used with a return style system and are in-tank use only.
Relay itButler stocks 30 amp relay and wiring kits from Holley and MSD. Voltage drop at the pump costs you flow.

Measure tank depth, pick the pump from the published rating for your fuel and power level, and buy the vent valve and relay in the same order. An in-tank EFI module installed properly is the last fuel pump most of these cars will ever need.
