Pontiac V8 64-72 GTO, Lemans, Tempest
A-Body Specifics — 64-72 GTO, Lemans, Tempest for Pontiac V8s
The 1964-72 GTO, LeMans and Tempest A-body has a quirk no other Pontiac chassis has: the frame mounts are not a matched pair. The set is a tall driver's side and a short passenger side, and they are not interchangeable. The other thing that bites A-body owners is oil pan to crossmember clearance, which gets worse the moment an aftermarket pan goes on.
Butler stocks the 1964-72 frame mount set, matching 3/16" frame mount spacers that solve the pan clearance problem, Butler polyurethane and stainless engine mounts, and Butler solid engine mounts for this chassis.

More About 64-72 GTO, Lemans, Tempest
1. The Tall Side and the Short Side
| Frame mounts are handed | the Butler 1964-72 GTO, LeMans and Tempest frame mount set is a set of two, one tall driver's side and one short passenger side. Order the set; do not assume one mount fits either corner. |
| The 455 exception | this one catches people constantly. Butler's polyurethane and solid A-body engine mounts both carry the same note: 1970-72 GTOs originally equipped with 455s are the exception, and to use these mounts you must change the frame mounts to the 1964-72 set. If your car left the factory as a 455 GTO, read that before you order. |
| Adapter plate interference | if you are using the Butler MM5 or MM6 adapter plates with these mounts, Butler notes some modification may be necessary to let the adapter bolt sit flush. |
2. Oil Pan Versus Crossmember
The A-body crossmember sits close under the pan, and it is the most common complaint on this chassis.
| Butler 3/16" frame mount spacers | a set of two that addresses the common A-body problem of the oil pan rubbing the crossmember. Butler notes they help especially when running an aftermarket oil pan, they fit the 1964-72 frame mounts, and they use the stock bolts. |
| Aftermarket blocks sit lower | Butler also recommends the spacers for IAII blocks in A-body cars, where the oil pan rail is 1/8" lower than stock. Order the spacers with the mounts rather than after the pan is rubbing. |
3. Poly or Solid in an A-Body
| Polyurethane and stainless | Butler's 64-72 A-body set holds the engine far better than a worn rubber mount while still isolating enough vibration for a car you drive. It includes the bolts and nuts for attaching to the frame mount, but not the bolts that go into the engine. With headers or Ram Air manifolds, ceramic coating plus a heat shield or header wrap is highly recommended, since heat can melt or deteriorate the poly. |
| Solid | the engine cannot shift at all, which is what a drag GTO wants off the line. Everything it does then goes into the frame and the body, and an A-body with a solid mount and a big cam is a loud car to sit in. Butler notes IA2 blocks must be clearanced or notched higher to fit, and nuts are included if you reuse the original bolts. |
Confirm whether your car is one of the 1970-72 factory 455 GTOs first, since that decides the frame mount. Then pick poly for a street car or solid for a race car, and add the spacers if the build has an aftermarket pan or block.
