Pontiac V8 455 Stroker Rotating Assemblies- Up to 4.250 Stroke
467 and Up — 455 Stroker Rotating Assemblies- Up to 4.250 Stroke for Pontiac V8s
Stroking a 455 is a different exercise from stroking a 400. The block already carries a 4.210" crank, so the 4.250" step is modest and the real gains come from the bore, the piston and the long-rod package that arrives with it. The result is a 467-475 ci Pontiac on a factory block.
Butler carries Butler/Ross balanced rotating assemblies for the 455 block in stocked-bore, full custom and build-your-own forms, plus Eagle Competition and Street/Strip stroker kits at 463 and 468 ci.

More About 455 Stroker Rotating Assemblies- Up to 4.250 Stroke
1. Stocked bores versus full custom
Butler buys Ross pistons in volume in the common Pontiac bores, which is why two similar-looking 455 assemblies are priced and scheduled very differently.
| Stocked 467-474 ci | A new cast or forged 4.250" crank on a 4.181" or 4.211" bore with custom Butler/Ross forged flat, dish or dome pistons from an exclusive Butler forging bought in volume, bushed full-float 6.800" rods, 990 pins, Total Seal Classic Race rings and rod bearings selected for clearance in our shop. Butler's own note is plain about it: buying the common bores in quantity saves both time and money. |
| Full custom 467-475 ci | The same long-rod architecture with the bore, ring type and piston shape all open, and the compression ratio specified to your heads. This is the assembly for a block that does not clean up at a stocked bore, or a chamber that needs a particular dish. |
| Build Your Own 467-474 ci | The matched 4.250" kit supplied for you or your machinist to assemble, with a choice of 4.181", 4.191" or 4.211" bore, stocked -8cc flat tops or a custom dish milled here, Total Seal Classic Race rings with CS or M Series options, and balancing available separately. |
| Engine builder package | A 461-474 ci rotating assembly and top-end package on a 4.250" stroke and 4.150-4.211" bore, with Ross forged pistons, Edelbrock RPM heads and a Comp hydraulic roller cam, sized for 10.2-10.4:1 on 91-93 octane. The block is not included; it is designed for your block and your machinist. |
2. Eagle kits for the 455
Eagle supplies fixed combinations at a set bore and displacement. Several are listed for 428 and 455 blocks together, because a 4.185" bore is .030" over on a 455 and .065" over on a 428 — same cubic inches, very different amount of block removed.
| 468 ci, -22cc dish, Street/Strip | Eagle's .035"-over 455 kit — a cast 4.250" crank, 4.185" bore, Mahle -22cc dish pistons, 6.800" forged 4340 I-beam rods, plasma-moly rings and performance bearings. |
| 468 ci flat top | Offered in both Competition and Street/Strip form at the same 4.185" bore and 4.250" stroke. |
| 463 ci flat top | A Street/Strip kit at 4.185" bore with Mahle -5cc flat top pistons. |
| File-fit rings | All Eagle kits contain file-fit rings. Budget the bench time to gap them properly. |
3. Competition and Street/Strip are built differently
| Competition | Forged steel crankshaft, forged 4340 H-beam rods with 7/16" ARP 8740 capscrew rod bolts, forged 4032 Mahle pistons, plasma-moly file-fit rings and performance bearings, designed for internal balance with no heavy metal needed. |
| Street/Strip (FSI) | Cast steel crankshaft with Butler's exclusive forged 4340 FSI steel I-beam rods, described as lighter and stronger than 5140, with the same 7/16" ARP 8740 capscrew bolts, forged 4032 Mahle pistons and plasma-moly file-fit rings. |
| Butler rods | The Butler long-rod assemblies come standard with 4340 forged H-beam rods from Eagle or SCAT unless otherwise noted, with bolt upgrades available. |
4. What every 455 stroker still needs
| Balancing | Every rotating assembly Butler sells, regardless of brand, must be balanced before it is installed. Eagle kits ship unbalanced. The Butler Process weighs and pin-fits the rods and pistons, computer balances the crank to the assembly and ships a balance card with it. |
| Neutral balance parts | An internally balanced 455 needs a neutral flywheel or flexplate and a neutral harmonic balancer, so order those with the assembly. |
| Pistons in hand at honing | Bore options start at .030" over so the block cleans up and the rings seat in spec; set piston-to-wall clearance off the pistons that are going in. |
| Lead time | Custom dish pistons run 10 to 12 weeks. Stocked bores and flat tops move much faster. |
If your 455 cleans up at 4.181" or 4.211", start with the stocked assembly — it is the same engineering at a shorter wait. Anything outside those bores, or any unusual chamber, is what the full custom package exists for.
