Pontiac V8 455 Blocks (462-503 cu. In.)

Biggest Block Pontiac Built — 455 Blocks (462-503 cu. In.) for Pontiac V8s

The 455 is the biggest production Pontiac V8, so its rotating assemblies start where most other blocks finish. A fresh stock-stroke 455 is already 462 cubic inches, and the stroker shelves take it past 500 without leaving the factory block.

Butler splits 455 block work into engine rebuilder assemblies on the stock 4.210" stroke, stroker assemblies up to 4.250", and super stroker assemblies up to 4.500", with Butler/Ross custom packages and Eagle kits, all balanced in our shop.

More About 455 Blocks (462-503 cu. In.)

1. The three shelves

The 455's own 4.210" stroke is what makes its categories different from a 400's.

455 Engine Rebuilder Assemblies — stock strokeRe-ring kits, complete rebuild kits with cast hypereutectic or forged pistons, and a balanced 462-468 ci assembly on the stock 4.210" stroke.
455 Stroker Rotating Assemblies — up to 4.250" strokeButler 467-475 ci packages, stocked-bore and build-your-own versions, and Eagle Competition and Street/Strip kits at 463 and 468 ci.
455 Super Stroker Rotating Assemblies — up to 4.500" strokeThe 494-503 ci full custom assembly, which is where this category's upper figure comes from.

2. The 455 advantage, and its cost

Less bore neededA 455 reaches a given displacement with less overbore than a 400 does, which leaves more cylinder wall. The same 4.185" bore that is .030" over on a 455 is .065" over on a 428.
Short stroke gains are smallGoing from the factory 4.210" to a 4.250" crank is a modest step in a 455, so the reason to do it is usually the piston and rod package that comes with it, not the cubic inches alone.
Stocked bores ship soonerButler buys volume in common Pontiac bores, which is why the stocking assemblies in 4.181" and 4.211" are quicker and less expensive than a full custom piston order.

3. What applies across the whole 455 range

PistonsGenuine Ross forged pistons on Butler's exclusive true-Pontiac forging in the Butler assemblies, flat top, dish or dome, designed to your compression. Eagle kits use forged Mahle pistons with file-fit plasma-moly rings.
RodsButler's long-rod assemblies come standard with 4340 forged H-beam rods from Eagle or SCAT unless otherwise noted, with bolt upgrades available.
BalancingEvery rotating assembly, any brand, must be balanced before installation, and an internally balanced assembly needs a neutral flexplate or flywheel and a neutral harmonic balancer.

Most 455 owners are choosing between a straight rebuild and a 4.250" stroker. If the block is already good and the heads are sorted, the stock-stroke assembly is hard to beat for the money; if you want 470-plus cubic inches, the stroker page is where to start.
