428 Blocks (433-495 cu.in.)

Rotating Assemblies & Stroker Kits - 428 Blocks (433-495 cu.in.)

Pontiac V8 428 Blocks (433-495 cu.in.)

Starting From More Stroke — 428 Blocks (433-495 cu.in.) for Pontiac V8s

The 428 starts life with more stroke than a 400, which is why its rotating assemblies begin where a 400 build finishes. Even the rebuilder shelf here is a 4.000" stroke package, and the stroker assemblies pick up from there on the way to 495 cubic inches.

Butler organises 428 block work into engine rebuilder assemblies, stroker rotating assemblies and super stroker assemblies, with Butler/Ross custom packages alongside Eagle Competition and Street/Strip kits, all balanced through the Butler Process.

More About 428 Blocks (433-495 cu.in.)

1. The three shelves under the 428

The 428's own stroke is the reason its categories do not line up with the 400's.

428 Engine Rebuilder AssembliesRe-ring kits, complete rebuild kits with cast hypereutectic or forged pistons, and a balanced 433-440 ci assembly on a 4.000" stroke. The rebuild shelf for a 428 that is staying a 428.
428 Stroker Rotating AssembliesButler assemblies at 4.210" stroke for 456-463 ci and 4.250" stroke for 460-467 ci, plus Eagle kits at 461, 463 and 468 ci.
428 Super Stroker Rotating AssembliesThe 4.500" stroke packages, 487-495 ci, which is where this category's upper number comes from.

2. The 428 shares parts with the 455 — up to a point

Shared Eagle kitsSeveral Eagle stroker kits are listed for the 428 and 455 together, because the same 4.185" bore lands at .065" over on a 428 and .030" over on a 455. The displacement is the same; the amount of material you are taking out of the block is not.
Bore has consequences hereA .065"-over 428 is a long way from a virgin block. Have the cylinders sonic checked before you commit to the biggest bore in the range.
Butler assemblies are specified to your blockThe custom Butler/Ross packages let you set the bore, piston shape and compression rather than taking a fixed combination.

3. What applies to every 428 assembly

PistonsGenuine Ross forged pistons on Butler's exclusive true-Pontiac forging in the Butler assemblies; forged 4032 Mahle pistons with file-fit plasma-moly rings in the Eagle kits.
BalancingEvery rotating assembly sold here, whatever the brand, must be balanced before it is installed. Eagle kits are supplied unbalanced; Butler balancing is available on any of them.
Neutral balance hardwareInternally balanced assemblies require a neutral-balanced flexplate or flywheel and a neutral harmonic balancer.

A 428 is worth more intact than most Pontiac blocks, so decide early whether this engine is a preservation job or a build. The rebuilder shelf serves the first, and the stroker pages serve the second.
