Pontiac V8 Edelbrock Heads
Two Chambers, Two Lengths — Edelbrock Heads for Pontiac V8s
Valves for Edelbrock Pontiac heads split into two length families, and which one you need depends on the chamber. The 87cc stock length heads take one set of valve lengths and the 72cc non Fast Burn, Ram Air II and Ram Air IV style heads take longer valves. Order the wrong family and the installed height is wrong before you start.
Butler stocks Ferrea intake and exhaust valves for both, in sets of eight and as matched valve kits covering factory sizes and the common 1.77" and 2.19" upgrades, plus 6000 Ultimate Race Series valves including longer 5.275" race lengths.

1. Which Edelbrock Head Do You Have
Everything on this page hinges on this one question, and it is answered by the chamber, not by the engine.
| 87cc stock length heads | these use a 5.110" exhaust and a 5.095" intake. Butler lists the factory combination as a 1.66" exhaust with a 2.11" intake on 45 degree seats. |
| 72cc non Fast Burn, Ram Air II and Ram Air IV style heads | these use a 5.230" exhaust and a 5.213" intake, with the factory combination listed as 1.66" and 2.11" on 45 degree seats. |
| Why it matters | the two families differ by roughly .120" in valve length. Fitting the wrong one changes installed height, retainer position and pushrod length all at once. |
2. Factory Sizes And The Common Upgrades
Butler's kits are listed as factory replacements or as upgrades, and the upgrade path is the same on both chamber families.
| Exhaust, 1.66" to 1.77" | the standard exhaust upgrade. On the 87cc heads that is a 1.77" by 5.110"; on the 72cc heads it is a 1.77" by 5.230". |
| Intake, 2.11" to 2.19" | Butler lists a 1.77" by 5.230" exhaust with a 2.19" by 5.213" intake kit for the 72cc non Fast Burn heads, which is the larger-valve combination. |
| Stay with factory sizes | Butler also lists straight replacement kits at 1.66" and 2.11" for both chamber families, which is what most rebuilds actually want. |

3. The 6000 Ultimate Race Series
Edelbrock heads on a serious cam is where the race valve belongs.
| What it is | Ferrea's 6000 Series is designed for reliability under high spring pressures and roller cams, made from EV8 stainless on both intake and exhaust with special heat treatment and stress relieving, hard chrome stems, friction-welded hard tips and a swirl polished head. |
| Sizes Butler stocks | 1.660" and 1.770" by 5.230", 2.110" by 5.213", and larger 2.190" intakes, all on 45 degree seats. |
| Longer race lengths | Butler also carries 6000 series valves at 5.275", in 1.740", 1.770", 2.110" and 2.190" diameters, for combinations that have already moved past stock geometry. |
4. What Changes When The Valve Gets Longer
A 5.275" valve in an Edelbrock head is not a drop-in.
| Installed height | the retainer moves up with the valve tip, so the spring you had is now at the wrong height. Re-measure and re-select. |
| Pushrod length | check it with an adjustable checker and order to the measurement, every time. |
| Retainer, locator and lock | longer valves often need a different lock or locator to land back on the seat pressure the cam card asks for. |
5. Order The Rest Of The Head At The Same Time
| Guides | Edelbrock manganese-bronze guides are separate parts for D-port intake and D-port exhaust, with a single round-port guide that fits both sides. |
| Seats | Edelbrock lists different seat dimensions for as-cast chambers and Fast Burn chambers, so the chamber question comes back here too. |
| Springs | Edelbrock and Ram Air IV style heads run a taller installed height than cast iron castings, commonly around 1.800", and Butler groups the springs for them separately. |
