Pontiac V8 Timing Cover Conversion and Replacement Kits
Front of the Engine in One Box — Timing Cover Conversion and Replacement Kits for Pontiac V8s
A Pontiac timing cover rarely gets replaced by itself. The water pump bolts to it, the divider plate seals against it and the pulleys have to line up when you are done, which is why Butler sells the front of the engine as complete conversion and replacement kits.
Two paths live here. Replacement kits put a fresh 8-bolt or 11-bolt cover, pump, plate, sleeves and gaskets back on the engine you have. 8-bolt to 11-bolt conversion kits for 1964-67 and 1968 engines move an early front end to the later, better-circulating 11-bolt arrangement, pulley and all.

More About Timing Cover Conversion and Replacement Kits
1. Replacement kits
Keep the pattern you have and make everything behind the pump new again.
| 1968 8-bolt replacement kit | a 1968 8-bolt timing cover, a FlowKooler high volume cast pump with an aluminum impeller, the water pump plate and all the gaskets. Butler notes it suits 1964-67 engines as well, just with the updated 1968 timing tab. |
| 1969 and up 11-bolt replacement kit | a 350-455 11-bolt cover, your choice of water pump, plate and sleeves, alignment sleeves, a stainless bolt kit and the gaskets. Pump geometry is a 4-1/2" fan hub working height on a 5/8" shaft. |
2. Conversion kits
These change the front of the engine from the 8-bolt arrangement to the 11-bolt one. Butler's own description of why is short: the 11-bolt style cools better and is more efficient, and its parts are far easier to find today.
| 1964-1967, non A/C | fits 1964-67 326, 1964-66 389 and 1967 350 and 400. Includes the 11-bolt cover, a high volume pump, a billet aluminum two-groove pulley in black anodized or aluminum finish, plate and sleeves, alignment sleeves and gaskets, plus a 4-bolt balancer with timing tape. The included non-A/C crank pulley is required with that balancer; a factory single-groove A/C pulley can be used on air conditioned cars. |
| 1968 | aimed at 1968 350 and 400 engines, with the same cover, high volume pump, billet pulley, plate, sleeves and gaskets, plus a stainless bolt kit. The supplied upper pulley lets the high flow pump work with your existing pulleys and brackets. |
3. Before you order
| Tri-Power | reproduction timing covers will not work with Tri-Power. Choose the dimpled reconditioned cover option instead. |
| 4-bolt front ends | an engine built through early 1963 with the 4-bolt water pump pattern cannot be converted with these kits. |
| Pulley size | the supplied pulley is for the 4.50" pump at 6-1/2" diameter, the A/C-style smaller diameter that also buys a little extra cooling. |
| 8-bolt cover quirks | the 1968-style cover is machined for later 4-bolt balancers but works with 64-67 6-bolt balancers with greater than stock spacing from the timing marks to the damper hub, is not machined for alignment sleeves, and may need some fitting to accept the water pump plates. |
Have your year, displacement and A/C status handy when you call. Those three answers decide which kit ships.
