The Cover That Cools — Timing Covers and Accessories for Pontiac V8s

The Pontiac timing cover does more work than any other cover on the engine. It carries the front seal, the timing tab, the fuel pump, the heater nipple and — unlike most V8s — the water pump itself. Coolant runs through it, so a corroded or warped cover is a cooling problem, not just an oil leak.

Butler groups the whole front end here: cast aluminum and stock reconditioned covers in 8-bolt and 11-bolt patterns, divider plates, sleeves and alignment sleeves, wedge spacers and install kits, plus complete conversion and replacement kits.

1. Three subcategories, one assembly

Nothing in this section works alone. The cover, the plate that sits behind the pump and the sleeves that carry coolant between them are a sealed system, and a new pump bolted to an old cover with a pitted plate will still run hot and still seep.

2. Which cover you have

Count the bolts holding the water pump on. Four bolts means 1963 and older, and those engines cannot use the conversion kits sold here. Eight bolts means a 1964-68 front end. Eleven bolts means 1969-79, with the early 1969 cars using a short 4" hub pump and 1969 1/2 and later using the 4-1/2" hub pump on a 5/8" pilot shaft.

3. Rebuild or upgrade

If you are putting a numbers-matching engine back together, a stock reconditioned cover in the correct year keeps the look right and the timing tab where it belongs. If the engine is a driver or a build, the 11-bolt front end circulates better and its parts are easier to source, which is why so many 8-bolt engines get converted while they are apart.
