Pontiac V8 400
The Whole Range on One Casting — 400 for Pontiac V8s
The 400 is the block most Butler crate engines are built on, and the builder kits here span the widest range in the catalog — a stock appearing 406 cubic inch street engine at one end, a 4.500" stroke 501 at the other, and a top end package for a block you already own in between.
Each Crate Engine Builder Kit is a complete Butler engine shipped unassembled: Butler Process block, balanced rotating assembly, heads, hydraulic roller camshaft and valvetrain, intake, oiling, ignition and fasteners. Carb or EFI, your choice.

More About 400
1. Which kit fits the car
These are genuinely different engines, not the same kit at four displacements.
| 406-412 ci, 3.75" stroke | the stealth, stock appearing build starting at 390 to 425 horsepower on pump gas. Bore lands at 4.150", 4.155", 4.160" or 4.181" depending on core availability. |
| 432-439 ci, 4.000" stroke | built on a 400 or 428 block with a forged crank and Eagle H-beam rods, starting at 400 to 475 horsepower. Butler built cast iron or Edelbrock 87cc heads with Ferrea 2.11" intake and 1.77" exhaust valves, COMP springs, locks and chromoly retainers. |
| 460-474 ci, 4.250" stroke | the 450 to 550 horsepower kit, with 6.800" H-beam rods, an optional four-bolt main upgrade with main studs, and Butler built heads with a choice of CNC porting. |
| 487-501 ci, 4.500" stroke | the largest of the factory-block kits, also in the 450 to 550 horsepower range, with Edelbrock out of the box heads and EFI or carburetor. |
2. The package for a block you already have
One listing here is not a full engine kit, and it is the right answer if your block is already at a local machine shop.
| What it is | a top end and rotating assembly package for a 4.250" stroke with a 4.150" to 4.211" bore. The block is not included. |
| Contents | cast or forged crank, forged Ross custom pistons, your choice of rods, Total Seal rings and Clevite bearings, balanced in Butler's shop, plus Edelbrock RPM heads in round or D-port, a COMP custom grind cam, hydraulic roller lifters and a billet roller timing set. |
| Compression | specified at 10.2 to 10.4 to 1 for 91 to 93 octane pump gas. |
| Rockers and pushrods | rockers are not included. Butler recommends 1.5 ratio rockers so that pushrod slotting is not necessary, and a pushrod length checking tool comes in the kit because lifter and rocker brands change the length you need. |
| Hood clearance | the Performer RPM intake sits 1" taller than stock. Trans Am shaker cars need a drop base air cleaner, and Ram Air cars can have Butler swap to a stock height intake on request. |
3. How Butler handles the order
Every kit bought online is reviewed by an engine tech who sends a formal itemized build sheet before machining begins. On original castings, final bore is set at the honing step and Butler picks the smallest usable bore unless you ask for more.
