Ship It in Pieces, Build It Right — 428 for Pontiac V8s
A Crate Engine Builder Kit is a complete Butler engine shipped unassembled: machined block, balanced rotating assembly, cam and roller lifters, heads, intake and induction, all matched and ready for you or your shop to put together. On the 428 it covers everything from a stock-appearing 4.000" stroke build to a 500-inch stroker.
Butler offers the 432-439 cu. in. stealth kit on a 400 or 428 block, the 460-474 cu. in. 4.250" stroke kit and the 487-501 cu. in. 4.500" stroke kit, plus a top end and rotating assembly package for builders using their own block.

More About 428
1. The Stealth 4.000" Stroke Kit
This is the kit that makes the 428 page different from the rest. It is built as a stock-appearing engine that does not announce itself.
| 432-439 cu. in. on a 400 or 428 block | a forged 4.000" stroke crank and Eagle H-beam rods, starting at 400-475 hp on pump gas. |
| Carb or EFI | the same short block runs either, so the outside of the engine can stay period-correct while the inside is not. |
| Why the shorter stroke | a 4.000" crank asks less of the block and the oil pan than a deep stroker, which suits a car that gets driven rather than staged. |
2. The Stroker Kits
When the goal is cubic inches, the 428's 3.25" mains and 4.211" working bore give the crank somewhere to go.
| 460-474 cu. in., 4.250" stroke | cast or forged crank with H-beam rods, in the 450-550 hp range, with Butler built heads and an Edelbrock intake. |
| 487-501 cu. in., 4.500" stroke | a forged crank and 6.800" H-beam rods, also rated 450-550 hp. This is the maximum-displacement kit for a factory block. |
| Shared hardware | Butler forged pistons and pins, Total Seal rings, C77 race bearings, Butler billet gears and chains, a high volume oil pump, a BP/Comp hydraulic roller cam and lifters, custom pushrods, a damper and roller rockers. |
3. Using Your Own Block, and What Happens After You Order
If your 428 is already machined, or your local shop is doing the block work, there is a kit that leaves the block out.
| 461-474 cu. in. package | a cast or forged 4.250" stroke rotating assembly for a 4.150" to 4.211" bore with Ross forged pistons, Edelbrock RPM heads in D-port or round port exhaust, and a Comp cam with hydraulic roller lifters. |
| Block not included | it is built for use with your block and a local shop to machine it, and Butler provides recommended clearances and tech help. |
| Nothing is machined off a web order alone | that is the point of the review below. |
| An engine tech reviews it | every kit ordered online is reviewed and you get a formal itemized build sheet before machining starts. |
| Changes happen there | upgrades, compression targets and final details are settled on that sheet, not after parts are cut. |
| It ships unassembled | builder kits are assembled by you or your shop, with Butler available for tech help throughout. |
Know your block casting, your transmission and how the car is geared before you call. Those decide the stroke and the cam more than any horsepower number does.
