Pontiac V8 Aftermarket Block

Where Pump Gas Meets 700 Horsepower — Aftermarket Block for Pontiac V8s

When the target is 600 horsepower or more on pump gas, a forty-year-old factory casting stops being the sensible foundation. These Crate Engine Builder Kits are built on the aftermarket IAII block at 505 to 535 cubic inches, with the bore, main webs and cam tunnel to support it.

Butler specifies them complete — machined block, forged or billet crank, Eagle rods, Ross pistons, ported Edelbrock heads, COMP roller camshaft, Canton oiling and FAST or Holley EFI — and ships them unassembled for you or your builder.

More About Aftermarket Block

1. The two power levels

Both kits share a bottom end. What separates them is the cylinder head and the camshaft style, which is where the power actually comes from at this level.

600 to 700 horsepowerEdelbrock 340 CNC ported heads with Ferrea valves, a Butler valve job, springs, 10 degree retainers and locks and 7/16" studs. Camshaft choice is open — flat tappet, hydraulic roller or solid roller.
700 horsepower and upEdelbrock Wide Port heads, ported, with the same Ferrea valve and Butler valve job treatment. Camshaft is hydraulic roller or solid roller only, because a flat tappet is not the right tool at that level.
Both505 to 535 cubic inches, naturally aspirated, on pump gas.

2. The shared bottom end

The rotating assembly is specified for the IAII block rather than adapted to it.

BlockIAII, sonic tested, completely deburred, bored and honed with a torque plate, line honed, deck squared, cam bearings fitted, with main studs.
Crank and rodsforged or billet crank at 4.250" to 4.500" stroke on a 2.200" rod journal, with Eagle 6.800" rods and ARP 2000 bolts.
Pistons and ringsRoss pistons by Butler at 4.350" bore, any compression ratio available, on Ferrea .990" by 2.930" pins with Total Seal Classic Race rings.
Bearings and balanceClevite or Federal Mogul race rod and main bearings, balanced internally.

3. Induction, oiling and the lead time

The rest of the kit is specified to match: Butler billet timing gears and chain, roller rockers, Butler pushrods, a Butler aluminum valley pan, Canton oil pan, Butler Pro oil pump with a heavy duty drive shaft, performance damper, timing cover, water pump, intake and your choice of FAST or Holley EFI, with an EFI tank solution available if the car still has a carbureted tank.
